End bad hair days for good.

We can all agree, that no matter how good curly hair looks, it can be an uncooperative bitch at times. It takes a lot of effort and finesse to tame those wild locks into a groomed configuration.

The struggle is real and we can sympathise.

Thankfully, we had the opportunity to call upon esteemed hair stylist James Nicholson. With over twenty years’ experience, Nicholson has a loyal clientele of international and national celebrities, is a KEVIN.MURPHY Session Master, and has been published in an impressive selection of international fashion magazines. So suffice to say, he knows what he’s talking about.

He helped us understand what it takes to achieve Botticelli-esque curls with these six hair hacks.

Hair hack #1

The best way to cut curly or wavy hair is to have it cut dry. This allows the hairdresser to enhance the character and movement of your curls. Hairdressers should be using curved scissors to improve the curl.

Hair hack #2

To get those just-washed bouncy curls in the morning, let warm water do the trick. Get the water as hot as you can comfortably stand, and the flow of the water will allow the curls to take shape. Finish up with cold water for shine.

Hair hack #3

In terms of product choices, it’s hard to say specifically because everyone has different curls. KILLER.CURLS by KEVIN.MURPHY will boost the curl, EASY.RIDER will tame the curl, MOTION.LOTION will enhance and keep the natural look. It’s all about knowing what works for you and using the appropriate products for the look.

Hair hack #4

If you only use one hair product for the rest of your days, make it a crème cleanser. KEVIN.MURPHY has one called RE.STORE, which is a unique self-cleansing treatment that uses lipid proteins to leave curls supple and well-formed.

Hair hack #5

The easiest thing you can do to improve your curls is to get a great haircut. This will make your hair so much easier to style. NB, when it comes to styling, apply product when hair is 90 per cent dry.

Hair hack #6

This one is simple, but it’s a biggie. Never comb your hair after towel drying.
