The nation’s favourite smelling food.

It’s now been scientifically proven that Australians really, really love hot chips.

Research conducted by Menulog and YouGov has revealed a quarter of all Aussies consider hot chips their favourite food smell.

The scent is so intoxicating, in fact, that two in five people said their mouths start watering when they smell the delicious, carby treat.

Which probably explains why 23 per cent admitted to eating other people’s leftovers, and almost 1.5 million people said they’d asked a stranger for a chip. A bit hypocritical, considering less than 50 per cent of Aussies are willing to share their own.

Food psychologist and taste and smell expert, Dr Alex Russell – yes, that is a real job – explains that the scent is so appealing because it triggers memories of eating chips in the past.

All those fond memories of scoffing chippies throughout your life are stored in your brain, just waiting to make you drool the next time someone brings their lunch onto the tram.

Menulog is celebrating the power of the chip by serving free hot chips in Sydney’s World Square on May 29. The pop-up will open at midday, and all you have to do to find it is follow your nose.
