MSFW recap: Designer Opening Gala

Electric feel.

If you were one of the lucky few to score tickets to last night’s sold out MSFW: Designer Opening Gala, you’ll know the room was buzzing.

You could legit feel it. I actually got home and there was so much static electricity on my dress I could lift it without touching it. It was pretty magical.

The electricity that filled the air pre-show, was personified when an electric cellist took his seat on the runway to kick off the show. We also didn’t know that was a thing, but here’s a picture to prove it. What followed was some pretty cool beats and a rollout of premium design talent.

The show opened with Craig Braybrook Couture, whose gowns left us searching for a black tie event to add to our calendar. His looks were complemented with oversized jewellery that left us literally dying omfg it was amazing.

Are dinner-plate sized earrings suitable for the races? Anyone?

The rest of the show saw designers largely play it safe, staying true to signature styles with an update for the new season. Zhivago introduced sheer panels, Carla Zampatti played with brights and Rachel Gilbert introduced modern volume to her gowns. Jason Grech gave his models body armour and crowns because they were absolute kweens.

Nevenka was no doubt a standout, with breezy summer dresses that already have us switching to 7-11 coffees to save up our dollars. Ashley Hart also rocked up in the label and absolutely slayed, pretty much stealing the show before the show had even begun.

Closing the show was Akira, whose detailed embellishments drew on his Japanese roots and played up the floral factor for spring.

Florals? For spring? With the oriental touch it was actually pretty neat.
