The FJ guide to: Making the most of the rest of your Melbourne summer

Wello wello wello uh.

Dear Melburnians,

Somehow January’s over, serving as a sad reminder that summer is nearing its end.

But before we’re cast back into winter’s icy grips, we’ve compiled a list of the best ways to use the rest of the summer wisely. Treasure it.

The Pillars at Mount Martha

Because the best things in life are free, a little day trip to the Mornington Peninsula is well worth your time. Only 45 minutes away at Mount Martha are the steep cliffs of ‘The Pillars’, a secret little spot that could be mistaken for a European coastline. Crystal blue waters and a ‘cliff beach’ make perfect for jumping at high tide, in what could only be described as an Instagrammer’s dream.

Beyoncé Dance Classes

We get you may be feeling a little too Bootylicious after all of the New Year’s indulgences. Therefore, Beydance are offering up classes and casual Bey parties for you to get down to in February. Classes run Monday to Friday at night and there’s even a Bey Yoga class on Sundays. If you’re looking for a little laid back Yoncé, Bey parties require no booking Thursday and Friday nights, running from 6pm. Studios across Brunswick, Fitzroy, Prahran and Richmond are all hosting classes, so there are no excuses not to get down with Bey.

Kalimna Falls, Lorne

One of the rare times we disagree with TLC. Kalimna Falls is the lesser-known cousin of Erskine Falls, which makes it waay less populated in the summer time. You can actually walk behind the waterfall at the lower falls, which we’re pretty sure is everyone’s childhood dream. The hike will take you roughly two hours return and you’ll see the lower and upper falls. Two waterfalls for the price of one 8km hike, probs worth it.

Yarra Valley Ice Cream Festival
February 10 – 21

Throughout February, the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie & Ice Creamery is holding its annual ice cream festival. Over 144 flavours from rhubarb and ginger to bacon and maple syrup are up for tasting, available any way you like. You can literally have your ice cream on pizza if you’re crazy enough to want it. Tasting sessions are also available to those who can’t decide, but bookings are essential.

Zoo Twilights at the Melbourne Zoo
January 29 – March 12

Animals + live music + dusk = everything.

Each summer, the animals of the Melbourne Zoo kindly open their doors and host 15 concerts under the stars. Visitors get full access to the Zoo after hours, before being treated to a night of live music from some pretty big names. This year is fronted by Birds of Tokyo, John Butler Trio, Jose Gonzalez and San Cisco to name a few. Belinda Carlisle is even closing the string of concerts this year, because heaven is a place on earth.

Visit a Night Market

There is literally an abundance of night markets to visit; you just have to choose which one. The biggest, the Queen Victoria Night Market, runs every Wednesday night from November 4 – March 30. The cups of sangria are always flowing and there are plenty of those potato stick things you never learn the name of. If you don’t dig the car park vibes there’s also the smaller St Kilda Twilight Market set across the silhouette of Luna Park. Swing by St Kilda Thursday nights until February 25 or for something else, head down the coast to the Torquay NightJar Festival throughout January.

Moonlight Cinema
December 3 – March 27

An old Melbourne favourite, the Moonlight Cinema is back this year screening everything from cult classics to the latest releases of the silver screen. The program this year aims to please everyone screening classics like Breakfast at Tiffany’s to Spectre and The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Grab an adult ticket for $19 and byo blankets or lash out and go gold grass, to be waited on hand and foot from your own personal beanbag.
