Where to save and where to splurge.

We really are becoming spoilt for choice when it comes to buying beauty. With so many items earning the status of 'cult beauty product', how are we supposed to know which ones are worth the splurge?

It can be tough when everyone who's anyone is slathering on Creme De La Mer (more like Creme De La Bankrupt) by the litre, while you’re busy scraping together enough change for a coffee. So to help you battle through the minefield that is the department store beauty counter, we've compiled a list of our favourite cult items that stand the test of time.

Nars Sheer Glow Foundation (RRP $59)

Finding a perfect foundations is a lot like finding a perfect pair of jeans – really bloody hard. Nars Sheer Glow Foundation takes the pain out of foundation shopping and is known to be a makeup artist’s go-to for most skin types. It’s long-lasting, brightening, has a buildable coverage and comes in a wide variety of shades. This foundation will set you back around $59 but it’s totally worth it to make your complexion look like silk.

Lucas’ Papaw Ointment ($6.49 for a 25ml tube)

This little tube of skin-nourishing goodness should be in everyone's handbag/manbag arsenal. Full of antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, this balm of gods can be used on burns, cuts, insect bites, rashes and splinters and dry skin. It’s also perfect as a lipbalm (der), a DIY lipscrub (with the addition of some brown sugar) and on the eyelid for a runway-ready glossy look. Models like Rosie Huntington-Whitley and Alexa Chung swear by it, so it’s gotta be good.

Becca Shimmering Perfector in Opal (RRP $60)

Have you ever wanted to look like a mermaid covered in pearls? Us too. To tide you over until your next under the sea themed dress up party, you can bring a little bit of mermaid glow into your everyday routine with Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Opal. This creamy iridescent powder will suit almost any skin tone and is the perfect complexion pick-me-up when your skin is having one of those days.

Anastasia Dipbrow Pomade (RRP $39)

Whoever said ‘eyes are the windows to the soul’ lied. Eyebrows are the real heroes. Help them declare their territory with a touch of Anastasia Dipbrow Pomade and a thin angled brush. This brow product trumps the rest because it is long-lasting, smudge proof, easy to apply, available in a huge range of colours and a little pot of this stuff lasts forever.

Urban Decay Naked Palettes (RRP $78)

If you were one of the thousands of Australians who almost wet their pants when Urban Decay graced our shores, then you are probably well aware of how great the Urban Decay Naked Eyeshadow Palettes are. If you have no idea what Urban Decay is or why people are so excited about being naked then you need to educate yourself stat! This bandwagon is totally worth it.
