Five of the Best: Mascaras

Always on the look out for the perfect mascara? We’ve done the hard work for you and road tested the best of the best.

Most of us are always on the lookout for new mascara, particularly if you’re not blessed with naturally long bambi-style lashes. These days it can be a bit overwhelming with so many formulas and different shaped mascara wands – where to begin? Here are our top five:

Benefit They’re Real! Mascara ($38, Myer)

They’re Real! Mascara has achieved somewhat of a cult status since its launch in 2011. The formula is jet black and long wearing, but the real secret is in the brush design – it has a domed tip to reach those short inner and lower lashes. Every lash gets some love with this mascara.

MAC Haute and Naughty Mascara ($42, MAC, Myer and David Jones)

This is a 2-in-1 formula with options! We love options. When using this mascara you can use the first wand for a natural, gently defined finish, or the second wand for a va-va-voom high impact look. This is the perfect mascara to carry round in your handbag and take you from day to night.

Kevyn Aucoin The Volume Mascara ($40, Mecca Cosmetica)

The Volume Mascara works with the infamous ‘tubing’ technology which coats each individual lash evenly and ensures no smudging or flaking. At the same time, it is super easy to remove with warm water or a gentle eye makeup remover. We also love the luxurious slimline red metal packaging.

Eyeko Fat Brush Mascara ($27.95, Kit Cosmetics)

Eyeko is a relative newcomer in Australia, and is already making a huge impact with eyeliner wizard Alexa Chung as a face of the brand. The Fat Brush mascara delivers maximum volume and gives a glossy carbon-black and water resistant finish. So pump up the volume girls! (but actually don’t pump your mascara wand as you encourage air into the tube and then it dries out).

Dior Diorshow Waterproof Backstage Mascara ($52, David Jones and Myer)

This mascara consistently wins awards and is a favourite amongst the Hollywood elite. We love it because it gives you thicker, sexier lashes that don’t clump, however many coats you decide to apply. This mascara makes you feel like maybe you don’t need lash extensions after all.

Pro Tips:

– For best results, always curl your lashes before applying mascara

– Using your mascara wand, wiggle it right down to the root of your lashes, from side to side and then zig zig across and out. This will give length and ensure the lashes are evenly coated.

– For even more impact, layer your mascaras. Use a lengthening formula first, and then apply a second coat with a volumising formula.

– For the health of your eyes, mascaras need replacing every three months, an easy way to remember is to label your mascara with when you opened it.
