Hair trends we’ll be trying from MBFWA

And why you should stop ‘doing’ your hair this year.

This year at MBFWA we noticed a change in the (h)air… a certain undone vibe. At Dion Lee, there were flyaways galore – and we swear it wasn’t the ocean breeze wafting off the harbour.

So we went straight to the source – REDKEN hair director John Pulitano – to ask what was going on this year in hair. Yeah Yeah.

Trend 1: The morning after
As seen at V Major

From backstage at V Major, Pulitano tells me the look they were going for was… greasy. I ask him to repeat it, just in case my imminent loss of hearing has set in early. “It’s textural, but with a bit of a greasy kind of vibe. A bit like Kate Moss in the ’90s after a long night out,” he tells me.

To achieve the look, he recommends to start with a blowdry, then tonging for straight locks. To give the roots a greasy feel, wax the roots with a firm hold product like 22 Hold. Then spray random sections with a wax spray like Wax Blast. “It’s a texture that’s both dry, and greasy,” he says.

I realise I’ve been spending my whole life trying to balance out my greasy roots and dry lengths, BUT OMG IT’S TOTALLY TRENDING RN. #swish

Trend 2: The maybe mullet
As seen at Ten Pieces

If there was one single, significant #stronglewk we saw during fashion week, it would have to be the ambitious mullet on a model at Ten Pieces. “The vibe was punk, skinhead and very strong. Lots of attitude… a little bit of flyaway hair, playing on piece-y textures. It’s rock n roll, you know?“

Pulitano is right, the mullet did make sense in the context of the kind of Bondi skater-punk Ten Pieces dishes up so well. “It’s about texture in terms of layering – all these lobs and bobs, we’re breaking them up into more rectangular shapes.”

So, wait, are mullets actually trending at the moment? “I wouldn’t like to say ‘a mullet’, but something that’s a bit more reminiscent of the late ’80s, early ’90s – shorter at the front, longer at the back, fringes.”

Sounds like a mullet to us. But what do we know?

Trend 3: Flyaway freedom
As seen at Dion Lee

The one trend I can really get on board with this year is the undone, complete-with-flyaways look at Dion Lee. Mainly because I’m lazy.

“It’s a bit rebellious – that’s my word for the season. It’s about a little bit more attitude this time around. For example, at Dion Lee, we were emphasising the flyaways… setting the hair free” says Pulitano.

And after all my hair has been through over the years, I think she deserves it.
