Cult Beauty: Bioderma Crealine H2O Solution Micellaire

Bioderma Créaline, aka liquid gold, is this month’s must-have product.

If you look backstage at fashion week or into any professional makeup artist’s kit, you will almost certainly spot a pink-lidded bottle of transparent liquid aka the infamous Bioderma Créaline H2O Solution Micellaire. So why has everyone gone gaga over this product?

Let me first take you back to where it all began; the Bioderma laboratory in Lyon, France. For the last 20 years, the company has developed dermo-cosmetic products suitable for medical prescription which have been highly recommended by French dermatologists. It is a range that the French would purchase from their local pharmacy (a goldmine of great inexpensive skincare products for people in the know).

We can presume that French makeup artists first picked up on the Solution Micellaire as a staple for their kit since it gently removes all traces of makeup on the face and eyes without leaving a residue, so there is no need to rinse afterwards. The water-like liquid has no obvious fragrance, and overall, is perfect for the poked and prodded faces of those poor darling couture models in Paris. As time has gone by, this humble makeup remover has gone from well-kept beauty secret to an absolute must-have.

From a makeup artist’s perspective, there really is nothing out there that compares. Bioderma Créaline is gentle, perfect for sensitive skin, and if I need to do several makeup changes on a job this is what I rely on. Worth noting is its unsuitability in removing waterproof makeup, like mascaras and eyeliners. It does struggle a bit, and I would always recommend an oil-based makeup remover for that purpose. It is one of those products that has truly crossed over into mainstream use, and I would definitely recommend to anyone as a beauty essential.

Thankfully we now have Bioderma Créaline H2O Solution Micellaire available in Australia, along with a selection of other products in the range. The only issue is the price – you can purchase a two-pack of 500ml bottles in a French supermarket for less than 20 euros, one of the main reasons it has been consistently popular in Europe. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case in Australia, where one 250ml bottle will set you back $29.99 at your local Priceline.

Overall, if you can afford the cost, this is one of the best makeup remover cleansers money can buy. Or on the off-chance you’re heading to France to escape the Australian winter, best to take an empty suitcase and stock up.

Bioderma Créaline H2O Solution Micellaire is available from Priceline and selected pharmacies.
