Step it up.

There’s no denying it. Winter is almost here and no longer can you get away with wearing slides day-to-day.

At least there’s one positive to come out of the doom and gloom of cooler seasons: shopping for a new winter wardrobe.

We sat down with Jo Mercer's design team, to break down a list of the winter shoe trends you’re about to see everywhere (and how to nail them).

THE CLASSIC

The heeled boot is a mainstay in winter wardrobes and this season, black remains the strongest colourway. But you can expect plenty of variation, with metal trims and textured leathers set to elevate styles.

How to pair it: “Pair a heeled boot with a printed dress,” says the team.
Styling tips: The heeled boot is ideal if you’ve got a busy schedule. “It’s always the perfect choice as it can always take you from day to night.”
Jo Mercer recommends: Zula in black patent leather.

GOING UP

Knee-high and over-the-knee styles are making a comeback, in a big way. Expect to see plenty of grey, taupe and black suede styles for a slimline look.

How to pair it: “Create a feminine look by pairing with a longer skirt. Or, for the more daring, opt for a dress which falls a few inches above the boot – this is an easy way to get legs for days!”
Styling tips: If you’re not quite ready for an over-the-knee, heeled boot, that’s OK. “Start with a flat or low heel and wear with an oversized jumper for a casual look,” says the design team.
Jo Mercer recommends: Agogo in grey suede.

GET SHINY

Ankle boots are here to stay but this season, things have stepped up a notch. Gunmetal, crinkled and plain patent finishes will be on offer, with metallic trims finishing things off nicely.

How to pair it: “Match it with a silky dress or skirt,” says the Jo Mercer team. “This will balance the heavier boot with a feminine touch.”
Styling tips: If you want to be a little daring, pair your ankle boots with a fishnet sock.
Jo Mercer recommends: Beastie in black patent.

LACE IT UP

Our personal favourite, the brogue, is staying strong for another season. Finishes are similar to that of boots, with patents and crackle leather in greys and black dominating the market.

How to pair it: “Brogues pair perfectly with winter knits and tailored separates,” says the designers.
Styling tips: While the brogue often gets labelled as on the androgynous side, that’s not always the case. “If you’re after something more feminine, opt for a style with a thinner sole,” suggests the team.
Jo Mercer recommends: Yuko in black leather.

SHOW SOME SKIN

If you like a loafer, you’ll be able to pick up a new pair in black leather, suede and patent constructions. Metallics are also making an appearance if you’re looking to give your outfit a little kick (mind the pun).

How to pair it: “Straight-legged jeans or flowing skirts will balance the masculinity of the loafer,” Jo Mercer’s designers tell us.
Styling tips: Avoid wearing loafers with socks at all costs. “Coming into winter, you’ll want to save your loafers for warmer days,” they suggest.
Jo Mercer recommends: Nathan in black patent.
