FJ Best and Worst of 2014: Runway moments

It’s been a pretty spectacular year on the catwalk.

As we wrap up yet another amazing year, we thought it fitting to take a look back and reflect upon the year that was. So we’ve put together an FJ Guide to: the Best and Worst of 2014.

In this issue, we take a look back at the best and worst runway moments of the year, because it’s been pretty spectacular to say the least.

THE BEST

Moschino’s Barbie runway
Anything that involves Barbie is a win, but this was just so well executed. There was nothing Barbie-inspired about it; it was straight-out Barbie and every girl’s dream come true. We ogled extravagant rouched prom dresses and were super impressed at the acting talent on show. Bonus points go out to Rollerskate Barbie.

The Chanel Supermarket
Lagerfeld proved he was king of the fashion world when he pulled this stunt. The Chanel Creative Director set up an all-Chanel supermarket for his show at Paris Fashion Week, complete with Chanel-branded everything. The world watched, jaws dropped, as models wandered up and down aisles browsing the Chanel range of Pringles, bath salts, paint pots, fine cheeses, hard hats…

Marc Jacobs’ make-up-free runway
Marc Jacobs is no stranger to newsworthy runways, but he stepped it up a notch at Spring 2015 when he sent models down the runway sans make-up. Yep, nada, nothing, zilch. We even asked Jess Hart to confirm it… just in case the internet was lying.

Kim Kardashian and North West’s matching outfits at Givenchy
We’re not normally Kimmy-K fans but this was totes adorable.

Chanel’s feminist protest
Yep, a mere few months later King Karl backed it up with another show-stopper. An A-list lineup of models whose surnames are not necessary (Cara, Gisele, Georgia May, Kendall, Joan) powered down Boulevard Chanel with megaphones and signage in hand, and fought for feminism. The whole hurrah subsequently came under fire as the incorrect medium to stage a feminism protest, but Karl (among others) remain nonplussed. If nothing else it was a GREAT show.

Gemma Ward’s surprise return

It took less than a minute for the beauty to cause an internet meltdown. Gemma Ward, who had announced her retirement from modelling in 2008, shocked the fashion world when she stepped out on Prada’s Spring/Summer ’15 runway at Milan Fashion Week. It was a moment of confusion and celebration. The eerily beautiful Ward was back!

THE WORST

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s matching cleavage at Lanvin
Really? Like REALLY?

When Ariana Grande got swiped by Victoria’s Secret wings
Or perhaps this should qualify as the best…
