Next gen designers: Cherry Luk

Future makers.

VAMFF is here and we can’t wait for Friday to hit. That’s when the National Graduate Showcase, Presented by Target and Supported by Fashion Journal (!) will finally take place.

We’ll see the best design work from some of the country’s most talented fashion graduates, so we know it’s going to be good. (Trust us, we helped pick them.) Here’s a little look at what’s to come.

Meet Cherry Luk from University of Technology, Sydney.

Describe your grad collection in three words:

Clean, minimal, tailored.

What was the most challenging thing about the creation of your collection?

The most challenging thing about creating my collection was deciding on the colour palette, as it is such an important element within my collection.

If you could design an outfit for any person alive or dead, who would it be and what would it look like?

I would like to design for Alexander McQueen and it would be a layered suit with a twisted silhouette. One of the layers would also have a pop of vibrant colour, such as orange or bright yellow.

What is your favourite song or album to play when working on your designs?

I like to listen to music from The Band Perry and Maroon 5 when working on my designs.

Is there a designer you aspire to be like or look up to?

Junya Watanabe. I look up to this designer’s way of cutting his fabrics and the unique silhouettes he uses in his designs.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I see myself leading a small design team and starting something of my own.

If you weren’t into fashion design, what would you be doing?

I think I’d be doing architecture if I weren’t into fashion design.

What fashion trend do you most dislike?

Wearing socks with heels.

Favourite fashion moment?

First time I showed my collection at the UTS Graduate Show.

What advice you would give to someone wanting to study fashion?

Don’t be afraid to try something new in your designs. Keep experimenting with different techniques and you’ll find the technique you are good at to expand further in your designs.
