A quick rundown of David Jones’ SS17 Collections Launch

There’s no other store.

The premise of this article is to fill you in on the looks in this year’s David Jones SS17 Collections Launch. But you’ll just have to wait a little longer, as we’ve got to talk about the event’s setup.

Guests of DJs headed to On Seven on Wednesday night – a stunning renovated ballroom atop the Elizabeth Street Flagship. We’re talking marble staircases, sandstone brick walls and huge arch windows looking out on Sydney’s CBD.

Let me ask, have you ever eaten dinner while models parade down the table? I hadn’t either. Floral-covered tables joined either side of the runway, with the catwalk snaking around the room.

The showcase presented styles from over 40 designers, including Zimmermann, McGraw, Scanlan Theodore, Romance Was Born, Camilla and Marc, Ginger & Smart.

Aje kicked things off, with a romantic collection complete with ruffled dresses, high necks and puffed sleeves.

Zimmermann’s designs followed on perfectly, with a true-to-form collection ft. lace detailing, a feminine palette and floating maxi dresses.

The DJ’s spring offering covered three major womenswear categories: evening wear, loungewear and daywear.

Rebecca Vallance, Camilla and Marc, Christopher Esber, KitX and Rachel Gilbert took care of the cocktail and evening wear, with designs favouring one-shoulder silhouettes and shoulder pads. There were plenty of jumpsuits, cocktail dresses and blazers to go around, as well as a few sparkling evening dresses courtesy of Rachel Gilbert.

P.E Nation and The Upside lead the loungewear charge, with sportswear-influenced designs that put comfort first.

There weren’t any surprises when it came to seasonal daywear, with designers drawing on relaxed boho silhouettes and tropical colours.

Bright red was a key shade used by Scanlan Theodore, Bec & Bridge and By Johnny. Spring florals also made an appearance (surprise!), but it wasn’t overdone, with the likes of Karen Walker offering bold prints in navy and white.

For those with a more minimalist heart, there were plenty of relaxed silhouettes in neutral tones. Lightly knitted fabrics and linen were clearly visible throughout the show and we couldn’t look past Scanlan Theodore’s flared linen jumpsuit in light taupe.

It wouldn’t be an SS runway without swimwear and the DJ’s swim offering was dotted throughout the show. It’s no surprise that Camilla, Zimmerman and Tigerlily lead the way.

On the menswear side of things, DJs showcased a mixture of international designers (Versace, Diesel, Paul Smith) alongside Jack London and Calibre. There was also swimwear courtesy of Boardies and The Rocks Push. Millennial pink was present across suiting, making for ideal races wear. Guests were treated to a bit of a strip tease, with male models undressing from suits into boardies right on the runway.

David Jones’ ambassador lineup of Jesinta Franklin, Shanina Shaik, Bridget Malcolm and Jessica Gomes closed the show, following a finale of models in blush pink designs.

If we had to draw one conclusion from the show: it’s that there’s only one place you need to shop this spring.
