Last night’s VAMFF events featured a runway of abayas and other conservative wear

We’ve seen some pretty special events at the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival so far, and ETU at VAMFF was right up there with the best.

In a hidden room in the back of the Melbourne Museum, a selection of invite-only guests and VAMFF officials got a lucky look at emerging Indonesian label, ETU.

The event showcased the Young Indonesian Designer Award winner of 2015, and was made possible through VAMFF’s partnership with Jakarta Fashion Week.

ETU aims to bring modest and sustainable fashion to the largely Muslim population of Indonesia, without compromising on design.

Designer Restu Anggraini works to make Muslim women feel fashionable, by interlacing modesty with luxury. And this combination was evident in the collection showcase.

Guests sat on makeshift stools scattered around the room. This setup allowed models to walk through the audience and created an intimate event.

Every piece in the charcoal and iron-grey La Voyageuse collection, could be seamlessly mixed and matched. ETU works with textures, and these pieces had a strong focus on layering and detailing. Patterns were created with pleated fabric, ruching and plaited rope sewn into twisted shapes.

Fitted shirts and slacks were overlaid with long trenches, wide-collared jackets and bodice-sized belts. Thick wools were combined with fur, leather and suede to create a truly unique collection.

Despite being made with modesty in mind, each of ETU’s carefully constructed pieces could easily transition into a western market. And this is where Anggraini’s brilliance lies.

As the models left the room, a loud cheer erupted, a lovely note on which the humble event finished.
