Levi’s x Google invented a jacket that makes phone calls, gives directions, keeps you warm

The age-old battle of fashion vs. practicality may soon be no longer.
Google has teamed up with fashion veteran Levi’s to bring us the first ever smart jacket.
Woven with Google Jacquard technology, the jacket has been specifically made for urban cyclists. The Levi’s Commuter Trucker Jacket will have the ability to let wearers control music, phone calls, navigation and other apps with simple touch commands on the jacket sleeves. It’s set to help cyclists to stay connected without being distracted from their surroundings.
The magic behind this feat is Project Jacquard, which was announced this time a year ago. Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects research unit have created conductive yarns and which can be woven into fabrics to create interactive textiles with some pretty endless possibilities.
What’s better, it’s actually a cool jacket. The functional basics haven’t been forgotten, with the smart tag that houses all the electronics being detachable, so the rest of the garment can be thrown in the wash.
The future may be closer than we think, with the jacket set to be released to the public next year in select stores and online.
And while Levi’s is the first to partner with Project Jacquard, there are plans for many more to come. Watch this space.
