New guidelines on ethical clothing production have been released for the fashion industry

Much needed.

Since the Rana Plaza factory collapse in 2013, there’s been increasing discussion about the lack of regulation of fashion industry, especially when it comes to human rights.

Now, just a few weeks from Fashion Revolution Week, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has released its Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible Supply Chains in the Garment and Footwear Sector.

The OECD  is an intergovernmental economic organisation devoted to stimulating economic progress. As it currently stands, 35 countries adhere to the guidelines, meaning companies in countries including Australia, France, the UK, the US and more, will be encouraged to work to these new standards.

The guidelines support a common understanding of responsible supply chain management, in order to assist companies in identifying and preventing potential negative impacts related to human rights, labour, the environment and corruption.

It includes comprehensive, government-backed recommendations that address the risks in both manufacturing and sourcing materials, that are in line with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.
