Android Wear taps Y-3, Harajuku Kawaii!, others to design watch faces

Meanwhile, wearable tech still won’t fly.

It’s probably safe to say this whole smart watch thing hasn’t exactly taken off.

The reason why is obvious. The tech giants failed to realise that in this day and age, a watch is worn more as a fashion accessory than a utility.

Apple slowly cottoned on, releasing the Apple Watch Hermès collection, and now it’s Google’s turn. The tech giant has joined forces with a selection of fashion and sportswear labels. ASICS, Harajuku Kawaii!, Mango, Melissa Joy Manning, Nicole Miller, Ted Baker, Vivienne Tam, Y-3 and Zoe Jordan have all designed a branded watch face for the Android Wear devices. And they’re surprisingly cool.

Of course, a smart watch has a digital face, so they’re nothing permanent. But Android Wear users are able to download each of the new faces for free from the Play Store.

It’s not set to have a huge impact on smart watch sales, but hey, it’s a step in the right direction.
