Marc Jacobs starts unveiling new campaign, features transgender Lana Wachowski

The spirit and beauty of equality.

Marc Jacobs is not one to shy from shaking things up. Last year saw the designer cast models with an Instagram hashtag, release a line of high-end sex accessories and accidentally slip a surprise peen onto his Instagram.

Continuing the element of surprise, Jacobs has tapped Lana Wachowski (formerly Larry Wachowski) to star in his latest campaign. Known for directing ‘The Matrix’ with brother Andy Wachowski, Lana came out publicly about her gender transition from male to female in 2012.

The director first captured Jacobs’ attention in 2012 not for her transition but for her eloquent words. Giving a speech in acceptance of the Human Rights Campaign Visibility Award, “she expressed thoughts and ideas that have filled my head and heart always but had never been so eloquently captured in language that was so tangible, intelligent, poignant and full of possibility,” said Jacobs.

According to the designer the new campaign is a “visual narrative… of people who have and continue to inspire me and open my mind to different ways of seeing and thinking.”

The campaign was shot by David Sims, styled by Katie Grand and will feature a wide variety of personalities. It’s set to appear in the February issue of Vogue, but Jacobs will be unveiling the rest of the personalities via his Instagram in the coming weeks.
