DNA forensic technology could very soon be able to identify whether your T-shirt is free from slave labour.
According to Business of Fashion, the technology is being developed by US-based company Applied DNA Sciences Inc. The idea is to use DNA forensic technology to trace the field from which the cotton was picked and to subsequently identify whether that field treats workers ethically.
According to the 2016 Global Slavery Index, an estimated 46 million people worldwide are living as slaves, with one of the biggest culprits as the cotton industry.
Within the next year or two, the company expects to be able to forensically distinguish the global cultivars of cotton based on points of origin.
It’s still a little while away from being a thing, but we’re all for it.
