A sportswear company has launched ‘nude’ underwear covering all skin tones

Six shades of human.

In another win for diversity, sports fashion brand Björn Borg has just announced a line of nude underwear. For all skin types.

The Skin Collection was launched on the United Nation’s Racial Discrimination Day, in a tribute to human rights.

The collection of microfibre underwear caters to both men and women, and covers all six skin shades on the Fitzpatrick skin scale. The scale was developed in 1975 as a way to classify the typical response to skin reactions to UV light.

It’s a pretty important development, with ‘nude’ typically catering to white-skinned individuals. Recently models have been calling out the issue in the fashion industry. One model even went so far as to create a Black Model Survival Kit because fashion professionals often don’t come prepared to work with her skin tone.

Thankfully it seems there is progress being made in the industry. Last year Christian Louboutin announced it would be making nude coloured shoes in seven different shades.

Marketing director of Björn Borg, Jonas Lindberg Nyvang, said of the collection: “Nude is not a colour. It’s a concept that everybody should have the right to enjoy. We call it six shades of human and the reason to our launch on the UN Racial Discrimination Day is that the political climate in Europe has been very tough as of late and it is time to show colour. This is our contribution to that debate.”
