Book review: Based on a True Story

The best thrillers are the ones that stay with you.

The best thrillers are the ones that stay with you, that follow you. Such was the case with Based on a True Story.

In short, it’s about an insidious friendship that slowly sours. Poisons would probably be the more accurate word.

As Delphine’s newfound friendship with ‘L’ intensifies (we never know her full name), our protagonist becomes increasingly isolated and reliant on this stranger. Slowly, Delphine’s paranoia grows.

There’s a great deal of ambiguity throughout, making the unravelling events all the more creepy.

Don’t expect a page-turner, as it moves quite slowly. But the pace is deliberate and nothing short of genius.
