Gig review: A$AP Ferg dominates The Hi-Fi in Melbourne

Parental Advisory: Explicit Content.

Straight outta Harlem, A$AP Ferg was centre stage in Melbourne on Friday night.

Twenty six year-old Darold Ferguson Jr. (more commonly referred to as A$AP Ferg), absolutely blew my mind and the minds of a couple of hundred others crowding the intimate Hi-Fi venue with his killer performance.

The rapper is a key player in the A$AP Mob; a group made up of American hip-hop rappers, producers, fashion designers and video directors. The A$AP tag was made famous by group leader Rakim Mayers aka A$AP Rocky. Since 2007, the crew from New York City have built an empire and taken their underground story to the forefront of the mainstream hip-hop scene.

Then we have A$AP Ferg who stepped out of the shadows in 2012 when he released his debut studio album Trap Lord.

“Eight gold rings like I’m Sha-Shabba Ranks”

The venue erupted last night when the Lord dropped his single success ‘Shabba’, after pulling a young crowd member on stage with him to freestyle on his own. The Aussie kid’s thirty seconds of fame was followed by A$AP Ferg grabbing his phone and taking a selfie on stage with his fans in the background.

As an avid music lover and gig attendee I can easily say that hip-hop events are in my top rated. As I gazed at the crowd and recognised local street labels, you soon learn that you’ve entered a world of talented musicians, writers, designers and creative intellectuals expressing their deepest and darkest thoughts through the hip-hop genre.

A$AP Ferg along with supporting mob member Marty engaged the room with their performance on a few different levels. Walking in there either as a rap god or someone who got dragged along to a Friday night show, you’d still leave admiring his lyrical flair and ability to both rap and sing. Ferg’s voice is undoubtedly distinctive, and having now seen his live performance, he gets four stars from me.
