Akala Hau, a growing small fashion brand, is seeking a passionate and skilled Sewing Machinist to join our team. This role is an exciting opportunity for a creative individual to collaborate once weekly, directly with our founder, contributing to the realisation of innovative designs and high-quality garments.
As Akala Hau expands into more unique one of a kind designs and custom/ formalwear, we need someone confident in tackling more intricate designs, ensuring every piece meets the exceptional standards our customers love!
Must be Melbourne-based.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
- Patternmaking skills and confidence with technical sewing.
- A collaborative mindset and enthusiasm for creative problem-solving.
- Strong attention to detail, with a passion for producing high-quality garments.
- Eagerness to learn, grow, and adapt to new challenges.
- A solid understanding of various sewing machinery.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
- Currently studying or a graduate of a fashion design. (Or really, just someone who can sew in a professional manner)
- Available casually now and in the future, for at least one day a week.
- Possesses a strong portfolio of self-created garments showcasing their skillset and execution according to a brief.
- Aligns personally with Akala Hau’s brand values and aesthetic.
- Holds a Victorian driver’s license and is comfortable commuting.
- Open to participating in content creation for Akala Hau’s marketing.
- Want to sew and have fun!

Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the owner to bring design concepts to life.
- Lead sewing operations for production of unique and high-quality garments.
- Develop and refine patterns for custom and formalwear collections.
- Assist in creating detailed tech packs for designs.
- Operate and maintain various sewing machines confidently.
- Ensure every garment is finished to a high standard, paying attention to detail.
- Troubleshoot and solve design or production challenges.
- Contribute to the growth of Akala Hau’s product range through creative input.
