5 yoga wear brands you haven’t heard of

An expert shares her faves.

As a pilates and barre instructor, and a yoga teacher in training, I live in leggings. I know the dangers of faded colours, saggy elastic or accidental bumster effect. Over the past five years I have tried and tested yoga wear from everywhere. Here are the brands I wear on rotation and highly recommend, whether you are wearing them for high-impact functional fitness or an evening yin yoga class.

This US brand is beloved of yoga instructors and fashion-forward yoginis internationally. You will see it Instagrammed from Silver Lakes to Senegal. Their leggings are high-waisted and longer than the average length to allow for the leg lengthening tuck over the heel. Multi-hued tank tops and crops are also part of the offering. Available from their website and also The Iconic.

Om Shanti Clothing

All-new designs and an eco-friendly range were released in July. Om Shanti does incredible prints, blending floral, geometric and animal graphics for unique pieces. Their Pink Galaxy Aztec leggings are a favourite and new prints include polka dots with roses, neon feathers and fierce tiger skin. Shipping costs to Australia are minimal but it is worth your while to order more than one piece.

Dharma Bums

Prepare to embrace the #LoveMyDharmaBums hashtag when you shimmy your limbs into prints like pixelated roses, disco inspired glitter, candy, marbled blue and rainbow zebra. If leggings aren’t your preferred yoga wear, the newly arrived black harem pant is flattering and could easily be dressed up for after (yoga) hours.

Mika Yoga Wear

A must-know brand for any yogini, dancer, pilates or barre lover. From tiny shorts to full-length leggings, every piece works hard to flatter. There are multiple options in cuts, from above-the-navel to V-cut waistlines and cropped to ankle-covered legging lengths. My favourite is the Kaya Legging that is extra long and super-snug fitting with a thick waistband. I’ve had one pair for 4 years and they haven’t aged a day.

An Australian fitness label that makes workout gear for women who do more than wear it to the juice bar. The fabrics are designed to wick sweat and go from crossfit to Bikram, barre to boxing. There are leggings, jackets (the neon orange is a standout), tanks and sports bras. The sports bras have slight and subtle padding, which is hugely flattering and also functional.
