Jane Birkin has requested that her name be removed from the Hermès Birkin bag

Selling around the world for around $10,500 to $150,000 a pop, we are quite sure you have heard of the Hermès Birkin Bag.
It has been 31 years since the Parisian fashion house named its iconic bag after British beauty, Jane Birkin. But this week Birkin has requested that her name no longer be associated with the alligator-skin interpretation of the accessory.
Yep, that would mean changing the name of the Birkin Bag.
Birkin’s request follows a recently published PETA exposé on crocodile farms where the animals are allegedly subject to cruel and inhumane treatment.
In a recent statement, she said “having been alerted to the cruel practices reserved for crocodiles during their slaughter to make Hermès handbags carrying my name… I have asked Hermès to debaptise the Birkin Croco until better practices in line with international norms can be put in place.”
PETA is sending its thanks to Jane for speaking out about the issue and they hope that her stance on animal cruelty will catch on in the fashion world, or at least in the case of the Birkin bag.
As for Hermès, they claim to be equally as shocked after discovering the breach of humane practices and promise that an investigation of the Texas alligator farm is already underway.
