Next gen designers: Liz Kim from UTS

Fashion’s new class.

There’s under a month until the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival kicks off for 2016 and we’ve got a bunch of reasons why we’re excited.

One of these is that we’re Supporting Partners of the VAMFF National Graduate Showcase, Presented by Target.

So we’ve been spending a lot of time getting to know the creative talents that are the 12 finalists. And we think you should too.

Meet Liz Kim from University of Technology Sydney.

Describe your collection in three words:

Raw, whimsical, tactile.

What was the most challenging thing about the creation of your collection?

Going for several days without sleep and slowly losing my mind.

If you could design an outfit for any person alive or dead, who would it be and what would it look like?

David Beckham. Just coz he’s hot. Or Greg Inglis. Dayum he’s hot too. I’ll just make them a shirt with my face on it.

What is your favourite song or album to play when working on your designs?

I’m not really into any music, so I either just listen to whatever’s on the radio or I prefer just chatting to mates while working.

Is there a designer you aspire to be like or look up to?

I don’t have one person in particular but I honestly look up to every single designer out there. Fashion design itself is so underrated, in the sense that people think we just draw and make clothes and it’s all glamour and happy butterflies. But it’s not. So much work goes into any collection, so I respect all the designers out there that have made a name for themselves in this field.

Where do you think there is a gap in the fashion market?

We really need to close the thigh gap. Although there has been an increase in promoting positive body image, I feel as though more should be done. There are just too many young girls and guys these days going to extreme lengths to achieve unrealistic body goals set by the industry.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

Hopefully I will have my own label or boutique set up. Otherwise I really want to look into fashion buying.

If you weren’t into fashion design, what would you be doing?

Photography or interior design. Something creative, for sure.

What fashion trend do you most dislike?

Wearing leggings/tights as pants. Just no. This needs to stop please, or make it illegal. I do not want to see your camel toe and the bright underwear seeping through the fabric.

Favourite fashion moment?

The day of our graduate fashion show, when all that hard work finally became acknowledged. And friends finally realising why I disappeared from the face of the earth and couldn’t make it to any social events for the whole year.

What advice you would give to someone wanting to study fashion?

Think about it. Really hard. Do you really want to do it? Keep in mind that your money, health, mental health and relationships may kind of go downhill and you won’t have a social life in your final year. Only kidding! (Not really). All jokes aside, if you’re passionate then it will be all worth it in the end. Just make sure you MANAGE YOUR TIME WELL. It’s the most obvious but most crucial advice. Once you conquer fashion, you can seriously conquer anything. GO FOR IT!
