The True Cost is screening in Melbourne next week

Followed by a Q&A with Siggi McCarthy.

At Fashion Journal, we love seeing the slow fashion movement gain momentum. Sustainable, local brands like Yevu and Collective Closets are making their way into our wardrobes; new initiatives like Upstitch are bursting onto the scene; and big labels are adopting more ethically conscious behaviours. It’s good to know ethics is playing a large part in the future of fashion. Though despite this progress, a film screening at this year’s Human Rights Arts & Film Festival proves there’s still a lot of work to be done.

The True Cost takes a deep look into the current state of the fashion industry, revealing the story behind our clothes: the effects of a globalised fashion industry or ‘fast fashion’ market. In a startling reality check, the film traces the clothing production line, from dystopian factories to Fashion Week runways and Black Saturday sales. You can read a little more on the film here.

The Human Rights Arts & Film Festival will be screening The True Cost on Tuesday May 10, followed by a Q&A session with Ethical Clothing Australia’s Sigrid McCarthy.

The HRAFF itself is kicking off on May 5 in Melbourne, then touring nationally throughout May and June. In its ninth year, the festival explores human rights and social justice issues through film, art, music and forums.
