The pre-loved fashion trends to expect this season

WORDS BY IZZY WIGHT

From 2005 twee to urban explorer, these are the secondhand styles to look out for.

Around three years ago, I decided to ditch fast fashion in favour of conscious wardrobe choices. I opted into secondhand shopping big-time (still true today) and curated my very own thrifted capsule wardrobe. But as a chronically online girlie, I struggled to resist the abundance of microtrends that suddenly flooded my For You Page.

It was platforms like Depop and consignment stores like Goodbyes that taught me circular fashion didn’t have to be boring. There are ways you can engage with ‘trends’ in a mindful way, seasonally adjusting your wardrobe to include new textures, shapes and colour palettes. Besides, who knows what’s really ‘trendy’ anymore?

As Depop’s Category and Trend Manager Agustina Panzoni tells me, “Everything is happening, everything is trending, everything is in freefall. We’re moving into the season of flex dressing”. And it’s true – there really are no rules. But if you’re looking to find a secondhand summer gem, Agustina and Lachlan Sully, the Assistant Manager at Goodbyes Brunswick, have compiled a list of planet-friendly trends to look out for.

Layers on layers on layers on layers

Wear everything you own at once. A cropped fitted jacket over a longer-length tee over an A-line skirt over a pair of baggy jeans with a hat, sunnies and a scarf. Or an oversized hoodie over a dress over a pair of wide-leg shorts over a pair of Adidas track pants… you get the idea.

Feel free to mix contrasting fabrics, textures and prints; how you dress is one of the easiest ways of expressing your individuality. Wearing tons of layers is also great as the weather warms up, you can always strip some off to reveal what’s underneath.

Unironic pretty is back. This time though, it’s less Alannah Hill or Zooey Deschanel and more Marissa Cooper attending high school in Chanel. Feel your femme fantasy in tweed jackets, ballet flats, devoré velvet skirt suits with lace trim, lace on anything really, floral prints, satin ribbon, rosettes, Keds, polka dots and layers of ruffles. Look out for vintage Anna Molinari, Alberta Ferretti, Rodarte, Sonia Rykiel, Valentino, Jill Stuart, Blumarine, Miu Miu, etc…

Wear a suit

As RuPaul says in his Masterclass, “Wear a suit”. Well, he says “Wear a suit if you want to make more money”, but why not just wear one for fun? Having a suit that fits you well isn’t that important either. It should be oversized and dishevelled, with a baggy (un-ironed) shirt and a sloppily-done tie. It’s about what it feels like to wear a suit; to almost cosplay as an ‘adult’ while being an adult.

Why not dress like you’re strolling around Mykonos or Marseille? Tight-fitting polo shirts, low-rise distressed denim, large shiny belt buckles, a pair of thongs, mountains of jewels on every limb and a worn baseball cap, why not? Wrap-around sunglasses are a must, as well as a giant designer bag. Maybe even a visible bikini under all of this. Who cares? You’re on holiday! Well, kind of. Look out for Dsquared2, Pucci, True Religion, Armani Exchange, old Dolce and Gabbana, Iceberg, Missoni and Diesel.

Accessories

The scale of our accessories is evolving. Sunglasses are suddenly gigantic and wrap around our entire heads. Scarves are super skinny and long with fringe or beading and worn all year round. Bags are huge and practical for a change. Carry around everything you could possibly need throughout your day and night, maybe even the next day. For footwear, think chunky-yet-funky… like boat shoes with a thick sole, square-toe loafers on a clown-like scale or a pair of bulky slides or thongs that will make your (possibly giant) feet look petite.

The villain that embraced a confident self has become most cocky and daring; a rebellious spirit roams through party season and garners envious stares. Engage in this trend through dark makeup and metallic accessories, [bringing] ’90s grunge to your outfit. At Depop, we’ve seen searches for ‘grunge’ increase by 169 per cent year on year. Look to straight and sleek silhouettes for inspiration, paired with glamorous pieces such as sequinned tops, black leather pants and silver jewellery.

Leather racing jackets are particularly popular at the moment… both stylish and durable, Depop has seen a 143 per cent increase in searches for ‘leather bomber jacket’ year on year. A classic pair of Doc Marten boots are [also] an easy way to incorporate this trend into your wardrobe.

[Metafemme means] a youthful spirit that enchants others… resembling a fairytale character. Engage in this trend by drawing on Valentino hot pink and red rosé-ish palettes on elegant, less-seductive silhouettes. Think puff-sleeved dresses, rose pearl chokers, tweed co-ords and sheer lace gloves!

Nine-to-fivers require a modern tailored wardrobe that is also suitable for daily commuting. The motion doesn’t stop on the weekend, as [this] aesthetic is suitable for brunching with friends, museum roaming and Sunday pub dinners.

Engage in this trend by sourcing weather-proof outerwear, functional techwear accessories and chunky trail-shoe-inspired sneakers paired with smart button-up shirts and tailored pants for elevation.
