Rihanna and Lupita Nyong’o may star in a new thriller together

Inspired by a meme.

Twitter is no stranger to viral memes and sassy captions. And now, one meme has sparked its own film.

It’s set to star Rihanna and Lupita Nyong’o, after a tweet that showed the pair front row at a Miu Miu went viral. The image was shared show along with a seemingly genius film plotline:

“Rihanna looks like she scams rich white men and Lupita is the computer smart best friend that helps plans the scans [sic].”

The image then gained the attention of both stars on twitter, who confirmed their interest in the idea. Director Ava DuVernay was somehow looped in and we now have the plot, stars and director of a very real film. No, seriously.

Things get a little unclear from then on, but Entertainment Weekly has reported that Netflix just won the bid for the film’s rights at Cannes Film Festival.

Joining the power trio, it’s rumoured that Insecure writer, Issa Rae, has already started on the script.

At this stage, it’s not clear whether the original concept is going ahead, but the mastermind behind the tweet will be credited nonetheless.

While there are no confirmed dates for the film, an early 2018 release may be likely, after Ava completes her current film.
