Beach House: Depression Cherry
Dizzy dreaminess.
There’s a certain dizzy dreaminess to Beach House’s music that you just can’t seem to find anywhere else. Like a soundtrack to a Lynch film, it’s part nostalgic and part surreal.
This is a real ‘back to basics’ album for the band, toning down the live drums and layered riffs of their previous records, focusing instead on the songwriting and melodies.
Despite not re-inventing the wheel, the best tracks here mix the familiar keyboard drones and rippling guitar lines with subtle electronic flourishes. The looping distorting vocals on lead single ‘Sparks’ and the reverb-drenched choir that opens ‘Days Of Candy’ stand out immediately.
Depression Cherry is a melancholy and bittersweet record that will stay with you long after it’s finished spinning.
