Flume tops off a huge year, cements himself as a performer at last night’s Melbourne show

Huuuge.

If you attended Flume’s Melbourne tour leg, you could be forgiven for thinking it was 2007 and you were watching Daft Punk performing their famed Alive tour. Well, sort of.

Fast forward nine years (almost to the day) and the next gen of electronic pop music took to the very same stage. Flume was in town.

Swapping out triangles for cubes, Harley Streten (a.k.a. Flume) took over Sidney Myer Music Bowl with an impressive set. The venue was fraught with your usual festival heads, as well as under-ager-ragers and a few curve balls, making for quite a mixed-bag crowd. The man of the moment’s mum also made an appearance (insert love heart emojis here).

Off the back of a very successful year – including a 2017 Grammy nomination for Skin and 5 ARIA wins – the 25-year-old put on about as good a set as any live DJ can muster. Think a seizure-inducing light show, with the usual smoke, lasers and insanely impressive visuals. The giant cannons peppering the crowd with climactic confetti was the icing on the cake, allowing Streten to somehow make button-pressing look exciting.

Musically, all bases were pretty much covered with most of Skin and its recent EP being featured. Cameos came in the form of show opener Vince Staples and vocalist Kučka, taking to the stage for Smoke & Retribution. Crowd satisfaction was also at an all-time high during remixes of Lorde’s ‘Tennis Court’, Disclosure’s ‘You and Me’ and Hermitude’s ‘Hyperparadise’.

If 2016 was the year of Flume, we’re looking forward to what a 2017 evolution may bring.

Highlight: What felt like a legitimate encore, including a rendition of Inoj’s My Boo.

Lowlight: No Tove Lo, Kai or Aluna George cameos.

Crowd Favourite: ‘Never Be Like You’ (obvs), ‘Say It’ and ‘You and Me’.
