Spotify to start withholding album releases from free users

Are you willing to pay for new releases?

If you’re a Spotify user who hasn’t quite committed to paying for the service, you may want to listen up.

The streaming service has just signed a deal with Universal Music Group that will allow the music label to delay the release of new albums to free users for up to two weeks.

It’s believed that in doing so, more users will be forced to pay for Spotify’s premium service, in turn, generating more revenue for artists, labels and the streaming service.

In a statement, Spotify CEO, Daniel Ek, explained the decision:

“We know that not every album by every artist should be released the same way, and we’ve worked hard with UMG to develop a new, flexible release policy.

“Starting today, Universal artists can choose to release new albums on premium only for two weeks, offering subscribers an earlier chance to explore the complete creative work, while the singles are available across Spotify for all our listeners to enjoy.”
