Zayn Malik: Mind Of Mine

We get it, Zayn. You like having sex.

Believe it or not, I’ve actually never heard a One Direction song in full.

I’d overheard snippets of their songs (usually in the FJ office, thanks girls) and not really understood the appeal of it at all. But then the cute one quit the band (!) and at the slightest sign of drama, I was on board.

So here we are, one awful face tattoo later with Mind of Mine, Zayn’s debut album.

It’s a clear distancing from the homogenised sound of 1D’s work – this is deep and grimy R&B, assisted by Frank Ocean collaborator, Malay. So there’s even some indie credibility here.

Like most pop debut albums, there are missteps all over the place. These are typically the ballads – but we still get genuinely impressive jams like ‘PILLOWTALK’ and ‘TIO’.

Sometimes, though, it does feel like Zayn really wants you to know that he enjoys having sex. We get it, Zayn.
