The hair colour trends Australia’s top stylists are predicting for 2025

Picking the brains of the best in the biz.

It’s been a big year for hair, literally, in large part thanks to Sabrina Carpenter, Beyoncés Texas blowouts and the return of disco curls. In terms of colour, the mood got warmer as more people embraced amber and auburn tones, led by the Cowboy Copper trend and ’90s Cherry Cola à la Dua Lipa. Gone are the days of ashy, over toned-blonde highlights – 2024 was all about soft, luxurious and expensive-looking hair, like this photo of Charli XCX.

So what will next year have in store for us? If the Pantone colour of the year, Mocha Mousse, is anything to go by, it’s more people embracing their natural colour, with a few extra adjectives thrown in; biscuit blonde, old money blonde, glassy brunette, you get the gist.

We like nosy people. Don’t be shy, head to our Beauty section for more.

We’re always keeping a close eye on the best hair salons in Melbourne and Sydney, so you know we found the best brains to pick for this story. Below, some leading Australian hairstylists share what they expect to see in 2025.

I’m predicting more red heads! I’m loving that people are finally embracing these colours. I remember when I was starting my career, a lot of clients would try to conceal the fact they had naturally warmer hues and now they’re embracing their natural hair, and everyone else wants to have these gorgeous caramel and copper tones. A friend of mine, Suzy Kershaw at A.H Salon in Newtown is the master of taking people through this transformation.

In 2025 I’m predicting that people will opt for soft pops [of colour], just like people are getting their faces done, we now see people getting small things done at a time rather than a whole facelift. I think people will want more subtle colours and tones introduced into their hair, rather than going full copper, for example. It may be a year of embracing people’s natural hair colours and enhancing this, rather than huge changes.

I’m predicting natural hues! No more of the copper, red, purple we have seen a lot over the last few years. Brown tones like ashy brown, golden brown, warm brown, almost black, will be big.

In 2025, I’m predicting people getting bored of their natural-looking hair and going back to bimbo blonde. Other predictions: Giselle Bundchen brunette with warm highlights, over-toned purple-grey blonde (2010 vibes), King Kylie era turquoise ends, Britney Spears Blackout era dark hair, Addison Rae basic bitch balayage, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen bohemian hair, dark plum hair.

In 2025, I’m predicting a softer version of the ’90s striped hair trend, I think this one will stay but people will opt for slimmer highlights with that obvious striped/contrast look – so hot. I’m also predicting more bolder and brighter colour but worn a little softer, not as many harsh lines and more feathered, blended styles.

Also, more blonde! People will get bored with their back-to-natural hair and want to go back to blonde (inevitable) but healthy, glossy, strong blonde. I’m going to call this trend ‘conscious blonde’.

In 2025 we will see more glossy, yummy, rich chocolatey colours as well as vibrant statement coppers and reds inspired by Chappell Roan. We will see less balayage and hand painting techniques and instead will see big colour changes and tint colours.

The colours that I’m predicting will trend in 2025 include beige blonde (a variation of lived-in soft blonde, defined by warm, beige shades), expensive brunette (low-maintenance, super elevated and timeless) and honey bronde, which is like a blend of expensive brunette and beige blonde.

I’m predicting that vibrant copper will continue to be a popular service in 2025, whether it be for clients who want to enhance their natural copper, or clients who want to have a full transformation!
