Growing up in an Indian household, oiling my hair has been an inherent part of my childhood. It was a ritual – every week I would sit on the floor while my mum would massage my head with coconut oil, letting it seep into my locks. The not so fun part was going to school the next day – hair oily and tied in a plait – where people would make fun of it. But despite the teasing, it’s a practice my hair has certainly thanked me for.
The ancient Indian tradition of hair oiling has been passed down through the generations and more recently has become a mainstream beauty ritual.
