Seven mascaras Australian makeup artists swear by

From chemist buys to K-beauty and bougie.

Mascara is the kind of beauty product most of us use daily, regardless of our skill level. Nothing opens up the eyes quite like it. Mascara is also the one beauty product we should be buying the most often, with experts recommending we replace our tubes every three months to prevent bacteria building up.

But much like our hair, everybody’s eyelashes are different. You may be blessed with enviable length but lack volume, or your lashes might curl to the high heavens but be naturally short. Mascaras these days promise everything, and we all have our preferences, be it a waterproof formula for holding a curl, a tubing mascara to prevent smudges, or a comb brush for separation.

Naturally, professional makeup artists have the best product recommendations because they work with different clients day in, day out. They know what mascaras give a natural look vs a dramatic look, and they’re probably tried every tube on the market. To help inform your next mascara purchase, five Australian makeup artists tell us their all-time favourites.

Isehan Kiss Me Heroine Make Long & Curl Mascara

Picked by: Carly Lim

My personal favourite is Isehan’s Kiss Me Heroine Make Long & Curl Mascara (or Volume & Curl). My eyelashes are fine and straight, and all other mascaras are too weighty and totally reverse even the best-engineered eyelash curler’s work. This holds the curl and my oily eyelids are no match for it – no smudging at all. It does need the special remover that’s sold separately though, but I think it’s a worthy compromise.

Hourglass Unlocked Instant Extensions Mascara

Picked by: Eve Louise Gale

Hourglass Unlocked mascara is a constant in my kit that works for even the shortest of lashes. Because of the smudge-proof tubing formula, It’s able to give dramatic length and curl but still remain friendly for sensitive eyes. It separates and individually wraps each lash in a tube of the richest black.

It’s gotta be the MCoBeauty Xtendlash range for me. It comes in black and black/brown, and there’s even one infused with a lash growth serum to help enhance lash length over time. I love it because it’s affordable and accessible. You can find it at Woolies, Priceline, Chemist Warehouse, or Kmart. As a makeup artist with a sometimes shaky hand, I really appreciate the tubing formula. If I accidentally get some on the skin, I just let it dry and it peels right off without smudging.

This is a new discovery for me, from the recently launched brand by my favourite makeup artist, Isamaya Ffrench. I had never used a brown mascara on myself before but now I’m converted. It’s a great editorial makeup mascara because it can really look like your natural lashes, but better. The formula is non-clumpy (unless you want it to be) and it can also be built up for more volume. I’d recommend it to anyone with fair lashes or those wanting a fluffy, separated look.

Charlotte Tilbury Exaggereyes Mascara

Picked by: Max May

This is a super black, glossy volumising mascara that you can build up to the thickest fake lash effect, without weighing your lashes down.

I’ve been through at least five tubes of this. It’s the best tubing mascara I’ve tried as it holds a curl and never smudges! It’s my go-to mascara for brides, or any long-wearing event makeup. It has one of those rubber brushes with fine bristles that prevents clumping.
