The one product that’s changed my curly hair routine

A reset for your mid-week curl slump.
For the past few months I’ve been hit with a bad case of curl fatigue. Taming my once easy-going hair has become a gamble of too flat, frizzy or crunchy. Even when I strike the right balance on wash day, by day two, it’s a tangled mess. Frankly, I’m tired of fighting against it.
In this rut, I’ve been surrendering a bit too easily to my blow-dry brush. Or, slicking back sub-par curls without even attempting to re-style them. As expected, the damage is becoming hard to ignore.

So, when Evo released the newest addition to its curl range, the Plot Twist Curl-Refresh Mousse, I was intrigued. Promising a quick reset for tired, lifeless curls, it felt like the perfect time to update my hair routine.

I wish I were the kind of girl with a diligent curl method, like the ones on my Reels who wrap each wet strand over a Denman brush to set a perfect coil. But I’ve found there’s nothing more disheartening than going to all that effort, only to be back at square one by the time you wake up.
Being in the swing of my first 9-5 job post-uni, I’ve had to accept that I can’t spend hours on my hair like I used to. I want to scrunch in my product, get on with my morning and trust that it won’t frizz up by midday.
That’s where Evo’s Plot Twist comes in. True to its name, the mousse is formulated to reverse your mid-week curl slump. With a scrunch, it restores all the bounce, definition and moisture that gets lost when you’re tossing and turning in your sleep. Enriched with nourishing Abyssinian seed oil, it brings back shine and reduces frizz, without flattening your volume.
Along with its styling properties, the mousse helps to strengthen your hair and protect against breakage thanks to chia seed extract and radish root ferment – an addition I’m grateful for while my strands recover from heat styling.
Importantly, Plot Twist mousse works for all curl types, which is ideal for me as my hair is a mix of 2C and 3A curl patterns. I’m currently growing out a shag, so my longer layers sit wavy, while my shorter layers have a lot more bounce.
I put Plot Twist to the test on day two of my hair cycle, after a morning hot Pilates class, where my curls were looking particularly ratty. When applying straight onto dry hair, I simply give the bottle a shake, flip it upside down and dispense the mousse into your hand. A small squeeze goes a long way! For my hair, one palmful is plenty.
Starting from the bottom, I scrunch the mousse through my hair to distribute the product evenly. Then, section by section, I work it into my curls, gently squeezing as I scrunch. I make sure to give my shorter layers (especially my bangs) some extra definition. Then, I left it dry while the mousse worked its magic.
For such a lightweight formula, I was surprised by how well it kept my curls in place and held their shape as the day went on. Usually, my shorter sections tend to stick out from the rest of my hair, but the mousse helped soften these layers and noticeably reduced my morning frizz.

My qualm with most mousses I’ve tried is that layering them with different products can leave a tacky, crunchy film on my strands. Plot Twist felt different in that regard. It was easy to build up without making my hair feel overloaded with product. Even with the mix of products already in my hair from wash day, my curls stayed soft and defined without a crispy finish. Plus, it left a clean, fresh scent that lingered all day.
Instead of slathering a bunch of different products into my hair and calling that my ‘routine’, Evo has bottled up everything I’ve been looking for into a single step. Most importantly, it took literally a minute to style, saving me the time I’d usually spend fussing and re-styling my hair.
Now that my routine is this simple, the curls have earned an extra few days in my weekly rotation. A spot they absolutely deserve.
