“The good thing about hair is that it 100 per cent will grow back.”

A few weeks ago, I found myself in line at Chemist Warehouse, tapping my card on almost fifty dollars worth of hair products. My basket was pretty revealing – I was loaded up with hair gel, hair spray, bobby pins, a scalp massager and a headband. The tell-tale signs of someone in recovery mode after a devastating haircut.

To be fair, it was entirely self-inflicted. I’d asked my hairdresser for a fringe trim and then again to go shorter. I have no one to blame but myself, but it doesn’t make it any easier. I keep going to tuck my hair behind my ears but nothing – bar a heavy-duty wax – can keep it out of my face.

We like nosy people. Don’t be shy, head to our Beauty section for more.

Though it’s only been a few weeks, I’ve been hanging out for my fringe to grow back to its pre-appointment length. Impatient and desperate to know whether it was even possible, I turned to Jaye Edwards, owner of EdwardsAndCo, and Becc Snow, founder of Alchemy Hair Salon, to get their top tips for making your hair grow faster.

Can I make my hair grow out of my scalp faster?

While everyone’s hair grows at its own pace, usually around half an inch per month, there are some things you can do to make your hair grow faster, starting with scalp care! Think regular scalp massages when you shampoo your hair, or using a good scalp scrub to ensure your scalp is squeaky clean. A healthy scalp sets the foundation for healthy hair growth!

So how can I make my hair grow long, quickly?

Patience is key with hair growth, allowing your hair to take its natural course in growing and achieving fuller and thicker hair. Some tips would include reduced heat styling, trying out hair growth vitamins, investing in a good hair care routine, avoiding tight or damaging hairstyles and of course, regular trims.

My hairdresser recommends every six weeks for a trim, but I just want it to grow. How long can I stretch it between cuts?

It’s important to take the advice you get from your hairdresser, they know your hair best, and regular trims are important for removing any split ends, or breakage so that your hair is as healthy as can be. If six weeks is too often for you, try heading in every eight to 12 weeks.

My stylist cut my hair too short, are there any tips for making it look longer than it really is?

If your hair stylist has cut your hair too short, let them know that you are trying to achieve the length back. A good trick to give the illusion of longer hair is to blow dry it straight, and using volumising products can give hair a fuller and thicker appearance. Experiment with some up styles and hair accessories while you wait for it to grow out.

I recommend O&M The Power Base Masque, this product works wonders to bind broken hair strands resulting in fuller and more lustrous hair, whilst promoting growth!

Can I make my hair grow out of my scalp faster?

Yes you can! Healthy hair growth comes down to many factors and can vary from person to person but generally, yes you can.

So how can I make my hair grow long, quickly?

My main advice would be to minimise extreme heat styling (a little with safe temp controls is fine), use a really good quality and professionally prescribed shampoo and conditioner, brush your hair every night focusing on the scalp (we want scalp stimulation to increase blood flow) and make sure you are seeing your hairdresser often to check on your hair health.

Trimming your hair will encourage healthy hair growth, I know it may seem like it’s doing the opposite but if you aren’t seeing results from doing the six weekly trim then there may be other issues with your hair health.

The hair grows from the scalp and if you have your hair coloured you will know that after six weeks you will see a regrowth come through, the hair is growing but if you don’t keep your hair healthy and strong it will begin to dry out and break from the ends, causing the opposite of hair growth. Keep up with those regular trims for the best results!

The good thing about hair is that it 100 per cent will grow back. To make it look longer you could add a few tape extensions around the front of your hair to add extra length and thickness, allowing your natural hair to grow out without you focusing on it too much.

Any products you recommend?

Date Night Shampoo and Conditioner by DunGud is my favourite combo for almost all hair types. It’s hydrating and lightweight, has premium ingredients and won’t add any build-up to your hair.

Untangled by Kevin Murphy is also a great one, it’s a detangler and moisturiser for the hair. Super easy to use and keeps your hair healthy and strong between haircut services.
