Mecca Max’s new facial sunscreen won’t mess with your makeup

Seamless sun protection.
Working in editorial, you get to have some serious ‘pinch me’ moments. But skiing down a mountain in Queenstown, New Zealand with a group of influencers and journalists in matching, Mecca-branded ’80s style ski suits ranks right up there. The group of us was there for a three-day trip, where we were lucky enough to be the first people to try Mecca Max’s new facial sunscreen, Screen Saver.
The trip was designed to put the product to the test – aside from a day spent skiing, we visited a bar made entirely of ice and did an array of outdoor activities – but unfortunately, due to new sunscreen regulations from the Therapeutic Goods Administration, I can’t endorse the product in the way I would like to. What I can do is tell you about its formulation and intended use.

Before we dive into that, it’s important to flag that sunscreen is only one form of protection – as the infamous Cancer Council jingle goes, remember to slip, slop, slap and seek shade. But back to sunscreen. Anyone with even a passing interest in skincare will know that daily sunscreen usage is an essential component of your skincare routine (when it comes to preventing the signs of ageing, sun protection really is key).

Mecca Max’s new broad-spectrum facial sunscreen is created with daily use in mind; it feels more like skincare than sunblock and is designed to sit seamlessly under makeup, providing a primer-like base. Finding the right sunscreen to wear under makeup can be a challenge, but the Screen Saver formula is lightweight, easy to apply and has an invisible matte finish.
Now for its credentials. Aside from providing broad spectrum SPF 30 UVA and UVB protection, it’s vegan, cruelty-free, fragrance-free and contains no parabens, synthetic dyes or essential oils, which makes it a great option for those with skin prone to irritation.

As for what it does contain, it’s infused with goji berry extract, vitamin E, chamomile and aloe vera, which contribute to the skincare-like quality of the formulation. Mecca’s Skincare Manager, Lucy Shaw, says this lightweight facial sunscreen was specially designed with makeup wearers in mind.
“Our [Mecca] Max customer is makeup obsessed, so we wanted to create a sunscreen that was lightweight, fast-absorbing and designed to sit perfectly under makeup or be worn alone. This SPF gives a real-skin finish that’s not too dewy or matte. It’s non-greasy and gentle on blemish-prone skin,” she explains.
On the trip, we were lucky enough to experience a masterclass from Lucy herself, and when she showed us just how much sunblock we need to be using each day there were more than a few audible gasps. You need at least one teaspoon to adequately cover the face, neck and ears, and it needs to be applied at least 20 minutes prior to sun exposure.
It might look like a lot, but Screen Saver is designed to easily absorb into the skin, without leaving an undesirable white cast. Make sure you reapply your sunscreen every two hours, and always read the label and follow the directions for use.
You can get your very own Screen Saver in Mecca stores and online here.
