The best products for hair loss, according to a trichologist

as told to daisy henry

The best shampoo, conditioner and hair treatments.

Combing through your hair in the shower and being confronted with the amount caught in the drain is a fairly universal experience (I hope). Depending on the day, it can send you spiralling. Even when faced with the knowledge that it’s normal to lose 50 to 100 hairs per day, when you have thin hair, it can sometimes feel like you don’t have a strand to spare.

Hair loss is based on a range of components, from your genetics to diet, age and plenty more. However, the products lining your bathroom cabinet can make a difference. Whether it’s a shampoo that promotes scalp health or a conditioner that helps prevent breakage, certain haircare products can help or hinder your journey towards healthy hair.

While the wide web is full of quick-fixes and easy solutions to hair loss, I decided to enlist the help of an actual hair expert. A certified trichologist and director of the International Association of Trichologists, Chelcey Salinger specialises in all things regarding hair loss, alopecia and hair breakage.

While hair loss is largely due to internal causes and therefore needs to be treated internally, Chelcey agrees that the products you use can help. “[There are] products that are supportive during times of hair loss and can help you to feel better about your hair, [while] preventing damage and breakage,” she explains. While you should definitely consider consulting a trichologist for one-on-one advice, there are Chelcey’s most recommended shampoos, conditioners and hair treatments for a topical approach.
