Add to shopping list.
No one can deny the satisfaction of finding a brilliant beauty product while you stock your trolley with your weekly shop. Picking up a new mascara at the same time as dinner is remarkably efficient.
That’s not to say all beauty buys from the supermarket are successful – some can be pretty disappointing. But what better way to avoid anguish than to have them tried and tested by the industry’s insiders?
We like nosy people. Don’t be shy, head to our Beauty section for more.
With this in mind, I asked 9 Australian creatives for the best products they’ve picked up when perusing the beauty aisle. From eyeliner to BB cream, their recommendations are worth adding to your shopping list.

MCoBeauty Xtendlash is my go-to! It’s tubing so it doesn’t smudge and stays all day. I also find it doesn’t dry out like a lot of tubing mascaras do. Plus, it’s cruelty-free and vegan.

The [Garnier] BB Cream is a product I’ve used on myself (not [in] my kit) since 2012! It is very basic but has a good level of hydration and coverage with a dewy finish and light SPF – their biggest downside is unfortunately they have a very limited colour range
The [Dermal Therapy Lip Balm] is without a doubt the best-medicated conditioning lip balm. I first discovered it when I first went on Accutane for my acne when I was a teenager. Best as a base and then if your lips are really chapped you can add some kind of barrier cream on top or gloss to lock it in

Sukin Original Hydrating Mist Toner! It’s the first thing I spray onto my skin after cleansing and before applying my serums and creams. It’s one of my favourite toners as it doesn’t strip the skin and instead, its environmentally friendly and vegan ingredients leave my skin feeling prepped and hydrated.
The second item I love is the Garnier Rose Micellar Water. The rose scent smells amazing when I take off my makeup and makes my skin feel so fresh after using.

A couple of my favourite supermarket buys are Weleda’s Skin Food and Burt’s Bees Lip Balm in Strawberry. [I] have used both for years! And of course, Cancer Council Everyday Value Sunscreen SPF 50+! All these products are ultra-hydrating and can help support and protect the skin barrier to keep you glowing all day.

Although I’m no makeup artist, I’ve slowly come to figure out what works for me and my face. So, when I find good products that work well, look good and are inexpensive, I usually keep them in my rotation for years. One such product is my all-time favourite mascara – Maybelline’s Waterproof Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara in Blackest Black. It has a tubing formula which means it not only darkens my lashes, extends them, and holds them in place, but it doesn’t smudge or fall throughout the day. I constantly have two to three tubes in my kit at all times – love it.
Another supermarket favourite, which is a new favourite, is the L’Oreal True Match Concealer. I picked this one up recently after running out of my usual Nars Concealer and was so pleasantly surprised by the glowy yet full-coverage formula. It sits on the skin super well, feels comfortable and adds a touch of glow that not many other concealers do.

Maybelline Waterproof Gel Eyeliner is an essential – holiday, night out, weddings – it’s super black and lasts better than high-end alternatives such as Mac Fluid-line. Another product I can’t live without from the supermarket is Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder. If I don’t want to use my expensive loose powders, it’s brilliant for everyday use.

During Winter, I always find my skin has little breakouts due to the changes in weather. The [La Roche Posay Effacelar Duo Anti-Acne Moisturiser] has been a lifesaver. It’s quick and easy to apply and works its magic in 24 hours to reduce redness and [the] appearance of blemishes.
Palmers Cocoa Butter has been my go-to for years and my mum introduced this to me first. The cocoa scent reminds me of summer, but the hydration levels make this my winter staple especially as I fake tan more in winter, this helps to keep my skin moisturised and gives me a perfect base for my tan.

A good friend of mine recently launched People, a haircare brand that (I can confirm) delivers results just as good as you’ll get in a salon. It’s a little more expensive than your Pantene, but at $16 a bottle it’s still very much affordable, and a little really does go a long way.
It has a super luxe feel too. I use the Hydrate Shampoo and treatment mask religiously and have also found the Smooth range great for my hair. I couldn’t recommend People more highly.

Anyone that knows me, knows [about] my undying love for gummy vitamins. Waking up to a tub of [Nature’s Way] Women’s Multivitamins and smelling the sweet scent of iron-infused gummies gets me up quicker than percolated coffee. However, the Nature’s Way Hair, Skin And Nail Gummies have become my total go-to and although I am unaware of any true benefit, the taste and placebo are enough to keep my mind at bay. Beauty from within, always.
My second supermarket go-to would have to be the ever-so eco-pioneering Sukin Signature Revitalising Facial Scrub. I can’t tell you how long I have used this light exfoliant, but it has continued to be my absolute favourite, especially when travelling. Pair that with the MCo Beauty Precision Brow Pencil and I am good to go in the morning.
