The best brow products, according to 6 Australian makeup artists

PHOTOGRAPHY BY HAYLEY PEASE

Happy browsing.

Though I’ve become increasingly slack with daily makeup and dumped most of my beauty products, there is one area I’ve kept in my morning routine. My brows.

Honestly, it doesn’t matter if I’m entirely makeup-free, once I’ve done my brows, I look polished. This little trick has proven extremely handy in Zoom conferences with clients, much like putting a blouse over my activewear.

It is, my friends, no less than a bona fide life hack.

If you too have found solace in a simple brow touch-up, or are looking to dip your toe into better brows, read on. Because in the interests of self-preservation post-isolation, I asked six makeup artists for their number one brow product recommendation. Turns out the professionals really like Anastasia Beverly Hills.

Rob Povey, freelance makeup artist
Name of product: Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Powder Duos
RRP: $43.00
Where to get it: Sephora
What makes it great: In case you hadn’t noticed already, Anastasia Beverly Hills is THE brands for all your brow needs (including the best brow pencils, markers and gels, as well as my personal choice, powder). This duo powder offers two complementary tones of brow colour, to create a natural, feathery look. The range covers all hues of hair colour, from palest blonde, warm auburn, ashy taupes, soft black and steely grey. Apply it with a sharp angle brush to create realistic stokes of ‘hair’. Finish with the brand’s Clear Brow Gel ($39.00) to brush the hairs up and secure them in place for your best model brows.

Raffaella Tomaiuolo, freelance makeup artist
Name of product: Shape & Shade Brow Tint
RRP:  $38.00
Where to get it:  Mac Cosmetics
What makes it great: If you are looking for a waterproof and natural brow pencil, this should be your go-to brow product. It has a dual-ended brow tint with a liquid pen on one side and a super pigmented powder on the other side. The thin pen also makes it extremely easy to use and draw very thin lines, which reminds me a little of microblading tattoos. Its natural-looking and long-lasting at the same time.

Georgia Gaillard, freelance makeup artist
Name of product: Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow Pomade
RRP: $33.00
Where to get it: Mecca
What makes it great: This product comes in a pot and looks a little like a gel eyeliner. I like being able to decant the product easily with a spatula – the more hygienically I can use a product, the better. I always decant the product onto the back of my hand and that way, I can always adjust how much I am applying with an angled brush. I like that, with this product, I can do a light feathered brow or a heavy glam brow.

Chris Arai, freelance makeup artist
Name of product: Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Pro Palette
RRP$110.00
Where to get it: Mecca
What makes it great: Oh my god, I have way too many eyebrow products. Okay, I recommend the Brow Pro Palette. It has a great color range, reasonable pigment and is easy to use.

Alphie Sadsad, National Artistry Lead at Sephora ANZ
Name of product: Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow Gel
RRP: $32.00
Where to get it: Sephora
What makes it great: Currently, most of us are working from home meaning it’s hard for us to get our roots touched, let alone a brow tint.  Dipbrow Gel is perfect solution. It’s a highly-pigmented, waterproof brow gel featuring a smudge-proof, long-lasting formula. It will also hide silver highlights in your hair, especially handy for Zoom Calls. Brush it through your brows to achieve a fuller, even tone all over, or apply through your hairline to disguise unwanted greys.

Bradwyn Jones, freelance hairstylist and makeup artist
Name of product: Amy Jean Micro Stroke Pencil
RRP: $42.00
Where to get it: Amy Jean Brow Agency
What makes it great: It’s like drawing one strand of hair at a time. The pencil is micro-sized, so it’s perfect for filling in the gaps or lengthening your shape for more definition. The pencil itself is extra long, so it sits comfortably in the hand. At the opposite end it has a spoolie for blending, which comes in handy if you just want to brush up your brows and not add any colour.
