Product Designer (Softgoods)
| company: | Bellroy |
| job title: | Product Designer (Softgoods) |
| location: | Bells Beach |
| work type: | Full-time |
| level: | Mid-level |
Role Description
Our product design team creates bags and accessories that people rely on for decades, not seasons. We’ve recently expanded into new colourways and tackled soft shell luggage for the first time and now we need someone who can help us maintain our depth of design thinking while we scale.
You’ll work directly with our Senior Bag Designer to transform ideas into specs, prototypes, and eventually products that thousands of people will carry everyday. This isn’t about churning through trends or racing to market. Great design here means having the time to perfect details, access to an in-house materials team and a fully equipped prototyping lab. It also means navigating our B Corp standards, adding layers of complexity that make the work more meaningful.Based in Bells Beach (where surf breaks dictate lunch timing), you’ll join a team that nerds out about construction methods and genuinely cares about the craft. You bring the solid bag construction knowledge and excitement about solving real problems properly, and we’ll give you the time to master the details, resources to innovate and colleagues who care as much as you do.
Key Responsibilities
- Spent an afternoon in the lab building mock-ups for our Laneway Tote updates, testing how different handle attachments feel when loaded
- Reviewed factory samples and marked up refinements in Illustrator – writing clear feedback for our suppliers
- Had an impromptu design review with our Senior Bag Designer about pocket placement, then grabbed our expert pattern maker to test whether your solution could work in production
- Presented three size variations for an existing product back to the team, explaining the construction changes needed for each
- Headed down for a quick surf check with the team to clear your headspace
- Prepped technical specs for two products heading into sampling ahead of a development trip to one of our factories in Asia, double-checking measurements against our construction standards
KEY SKILLS
- 2+ years of direct bag and pack design experience
- Strong Illustrator skills and the ability to create clear technical specs
- Hands-on prototyping and bag construction knowledge, you can either make it yourself or guide a factory to produce it
- Experience communicating with suppliers and refining samples through multiple iterations
- Natural attention to detail and genuine excitement about solving construction challenges
- Project management skills to juggle multiple pieces at different stages
