The accessory trends you’ll be seeing this summer and how to pull them off

Words by Fashion Journal

Need to know.

With wintery weather well and truly on the way out, it only seems fitting to welcome summer by overhauling our wardrobes and spending up on new pieces. But because it’s not always practical (or cost-efficient) to invest a whole new getup every time the season changes, we like to opt for new accessories instead.

And because no one knows jewellery and bags like the team at Colette by Colette Hayman, we went straight to them for advice on what to shop.

Here are six key accessories trends you’ll be seeing this summer and how to pull them off.

All out texture

This season you’ll see some exciting use of sequin, raffia and beading in statement earrings and neckwear. Don’t be afraid to play with colours and textures – mix chunky gold chokers with tasselled necklaces and thin silver chains. The more the merrier.

When it comes to bags, embrace spring by opting for pieces with floral embellishments and patches.

Our recommendation: Black smooth bee hardcase wallet

Seeing colour

A huge fashion trend this year is the layering of colour, whether it be tonal or colour-blocked. It works best in statement neck and earrings and a bold, bright outfit with a luxe sport vibe or styled back with a bold pantsuit. Add a bright bag in a contrasting colour to complete the look.

Our recommendation: Harlow textured green tassel tote

Natural in nude

If you’re not game to cover everything you own in bright colours, embracing neutral-toned accessories is a great alternative. Jewellery made from acrylic materials and tortoiseshell has been seen all over runways, and pairs perfectly with a minimal wardrobe or beachy attire. To make a subtle statement, look for bags which colour block various neutral tones.

Our recommendation: Sophia sunglasses

Shine bright

To take metallic statement pieces beyond a night out, opt for pearlescent finishes and patent leathers in light colours which can easily mix into a summer wardrobe. To complete your look, add stacked rings on each finger in whichever metals you please.

To dial up the glam for a night out, pick necklaces and earrings embellished with coins and charms, or try a body chain over a sheer dress or cropped top.

Our recommendation: Stone with tassel statement necklace

Keeping it classic

Black and white accessories are the perfect addition to any wardrobe because they make a statement but go with everything. Pair a colourful summer dress with a panelled black and white bag for a look that’s perfect for lunchtime drinks, or wear tasselled earrings with boyfriend jeans and a cropped tee for an effortlessly chic weekend getup.

Our recommendation: Drop ring pom-pom earrings

Going girly

Indulge your feminine side with jewellery embellished peach-coloured gemstones. Pair with a lace dress and finish with a floral-printed bag for the perfect Spring Carnival outfit.

Our recommendation: Stone cocktail ring pack
