WORDS BY MAEVE KERR-CROWLEY
For those who mean business.
Is there anything more classic than a striped shirt? From my time as a teen looking for new things to pair with my uncomfortably tight skinny jeans, to my adult years when I’d like to think I have somewhat of a fashion clue, there’s never been a time when my wardrobe didn’t contain at least one striped shirt.
Drawing on traditionally masculine styles and giving them a polished, effortlessly cool twist, a good button-up shirt can take you from work to drinks at the bar to sun-soaked swimwear days if you know how to style it.

To help you find the right striped shirt to suit your personal style, we’ve compiled some of our favourite shirts from local designers, covering a glittering array of cuts, colours and fabrics.
E Nolan’s Double Cuff Box Shirt

Taking everything that’s great about a classic striped shirt and really nailing the details, this style from E Nolan’s ready-to-wear range rides the line between formal workwear and an effortless everyday layering piece. It’s made in cotton and is cut in an oversized fit for a more relaxed look.

Esse’s Classico Stripe Shirt
Adding a little more intrigue to the genre, this shirt from Sydney label Esse opts for a thinner stripe and an oversized, longline cut. It’s made from Italian cotton for a fancy yet comfortable feel, with touch of pure white for the collar and cuff as the cherry on top.

Caves Collect’s Leo Stripe Silk Shirt

When you’re feeling luxurious, replace classic cotton with pure silk sourced from Northern Italy. This Caves Collect style elevates the short sleeve shirt game with an oversized fit, the feeling of soft silk against your skin and interesting, multi-tonal stripe designs. Its buttons are also made from repurposed river shells, which is a neat touch.

Par Moi’s Motore Shirt

If you find long sleeve shirts too stuffy, and short sleeve shirts too relaxed, this style from Par Moi is essentially the perfect middle ground. It’s made from cotton with a super boxy fit and snap buttons in place of classic button-up construction, so it’s comfortable and breezy. But the thinner stripes and exaggerated contrast collar still give it a refined touch.

Blanca’s Thomas Shirt
For those of us who can’t resist a crop, this neutral-toned style from Reliquia Collective’s apparel line, Blanca, has the potential to become a new everyday staple. It’s your classic, relaxed fit button-down, just tastefully cut in half. This makes it perfect for pairing with anything high waisted and eliminating the need for strategic tucking.

Sir’s Zuri Button-Up Top

Stripes don’t have to be vertical, of course. In fact, I’ll go so far as to say they don’t even have to be straight lines. Described by the brand as a ‘zig-zag stripe’, this multicoloured print on semi-sheer fabric is an offbeat take on the striped shirt trend, for days when you’re feeling a little devil-may-care. It’s cut in a slimmer fit that’s easy to tuck in or leave partially buttoned.

Matteau’s The Classic Stripe Shirt

Doing exactly what it says on the box, this is the classic stripe shirt. Made from organic cotton, it’s cut in a super timeless, menswear-style fit that’s slightly relaxed but still refined. It’s available in two colours – blue for that businessman-but-make-it-hot look, or earthy green for something a little different.

Maggie Marilyn’s Russel Shirt
Straying as far as possible from the typical loose-fit, menswear-inspired button-down, this shirt from Kiwi label Maggie Marilyn is an undeniable statement piece. With big poofy sleeves, a peplum hem and a contrast ruffle collar, it conjures fantasies of high tea, chaperoned walks by the river and coyly meeting suitors in the drawing room – while still looking cool paired with jeans.

Sanct’s Strings Shirt

Sure, this Sanct style doesn’t follow the button-up, collared shirt formula of the rest of this list. But it is a striped shirt if you squint at it, and its more abstract interpretation of the style is refreshing. Going for a relaxed, flowy silhouette and replacing the buttons with cheeky ties gives this shirt an effortless cool-girl vibe that’s great for layering or just throwing on with nothing underneath (scandalous).

Soot’s Afternoon Shirt

Available in a colourway called ‘negroni’ (without a doubt, a top-tier cocktail), the pink and orange stripes on this shirt really make it stand out. It’s oversized for that easy ‘boyfriend’ look, and looks just as good over a bikini as it does with jeans or your go-to ‘drinking cocktails outside at a bar’ pants.

Obus’ Note to Self Shirt

This is the kind of shirt you can style a million and one ways – buttoned up, unbuttoned as a layering piece, tied up in front for that Daisy Duke look. It’s a relaxed fit but still lightly tailored at the bust for a more considered shape, and is made from a linen-feel blend that lends it a casual air.

Venroy’s Oversized Stripe Shirt
Nothing gives off more relaxed summer energy than softly textured cotton seersucker, which is definitely appropriate from a brand founded in Bondi. This pink, candy-striped shirt features an oversized fit and a large chest pocket to hold your phone, sunglasses or cheeky little beach snacks.
