The future of Australian’s fashion industry.

Chelsea Subala, a third-year fashion student from Box Hill Institute, has won this year’s Melbourne Fashion Week Design award.

Students from six Victorian and one Japanese design school showcased their collections at the Melbourne Fashion Week Student Runway on Sunday night. Subala’s collection, SLAY, won for its excellence in innovation, quality and design.

The collection is inspired by Melbourne’s street-art graffiti and expresses this through both screen-printing and embroidery.

“The garments that an individual wears is a reflection of themselves, whether they are conscious of it or not,” Subala says.

The young fashion designer has been awarded a $3,000 cash prize, a mentorship session with Australian Specsavers design partner and an internship with ELK. The award also includes a 12-month mentorship with the Australian Fashion Council.
