Converse is bringing back platform sneakers with a reimagination of its Chucks

Words by Isabelle Sacks

A platform for self-expression.

The Y2K nostalgia is coming on strong with Converse’s latest Chuck Taylor-inspired collection, which gives the classic shoe a bold update. With a dreamy campaign led by the twin sister creative duo Fon and Fa, the Run Star Hike and Run Star Hike Low Top put an unconventional twist on your everyday Chucks.

The iconic canvas, rubber toe cap and Chuck Taylor ankle patch are all still at the party and iconic as ever. But the classic style is reinterpreted with a chunky platform, jagged two-tone sole and a futuristic heel counter punctuated by Converse’s defining star.

The Run Star Hike is also available in a Low Top. Essentially they’re low, but also high? Sounds like the best of both worlds to me.

There’s also a breakout iteration of the style, inspired by a traditional hiking shoe. The Run Star Concrete Heat Mesh features a breathable mesh upper and a vibrant heel counter, delivered in either an electric green or pink.

More than that, the shoes are comfy as hell, with an OrthoLite insole adding to the cloud-like cushiony experience of walking in platform shoes.

The accompanying campaign with @fa_fon_ is part of a worldwide collaboration with young creatives to interpret these elevated classics in a lookbook for the FA20 release. Working digitally and independently with respect to Miss Rona, each creative came up with a concept, styled and art directed the sneakers through a digital medium that matched their creative lens. ⁣

For Fon and Fa, the 24-year-old twins from South London, this ‘creative lens’ means bringing their exceptionally close bond and double the energy to the visual design space. Just don’t try to group them into one category.

“We don’t classify ourselves into one discipline. We are multi-medium.”⁣

Known for their fantastical take on visual design, art direction and graphic design, their work embraces the dreamy effortlessness of surrealism. It’s all then grounded in a natural setting to deliver on what the sisters call “the magical world we have dreamt-up in our heads.”

Inspired by their surroundings as much as what they can’t see or fully understand, the twins like to dip in and out of reality.⁣

⁣“Every creative has a bit of self-doubt, anxiety and insecurities, but it’s important to reflect on the process.”

You can nab yourselves a pair of the Converse Run Star Hikes and Converse Run Star Hike Low Tops in-store and online now for $150 a pop.
