Converse released a sneaker heel, so naturally, I had to wear them all week

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH CONVERSE

WORDS BY CAT FORSYTH

Perfect for stomping around town.

I am a dress-up girlie through and through. For me, getting dressed each morning feels like an opportunity. I get to ask myself ‘How do you want to express yourself today? How do you want to feel?’.

What I love about this is I can introduce a touch of fantasy into my everyday life. Some days, I want to feel professional and indulge in my part-time writer self, so I’ll slick my hair back into a bun (thanks Bella Hadid) and wear an all-black tailored look while I work from a cafe. Other days, I want to be a little bit mysterious and lose myself in the melancholy I sometimes experience. On these days, I’ll wear dark sunglasses everywhere I go (especially indoors) and blast Lana Del Ray through my wired headphones.

This form of self-expression, or ‘character development’ as I’ve been calling it, is one of my greatest pleasures. I spend my time building ‘worlds’ for my different emotions and experiences. So it was a no-brainer spending this week dressing up and incorporating the new Converse Chuck 70 De Luxe Heel into my different characters’ looks.

Converse’s latest release is my new favourite piece to play with. Growing up (and still to this day), I always wanted a pair of sneaker heels. The Chuck 70 De Luxe Heel is just what I needed as I spend a lot of time walking around, usually running between meetings and errands. I don’t have time for uncomfortable shoes anymore – I want support and I don’t want blisters.

Because of the OrthoLite cushioning and the lug sole (which gives the shoe grip), I was able to run around all week doing silly little wench things (like drinking too much coffee and looking in too many op shops). Here’s how my week in sneaker heels went.

Monday

Picking an outfit on Monday morning was easy: my current fashion fixation is my new pair of jeans. The perfect combination of bootcut and low rise, they make me feel extremely sexy, casual and chic. Honouring my inner child (who was all about wearing dresses over pants in kindergarten), I paired a little black vest top with a stretchy Bassike maxi skirt (a $6 thrift find!) over the jeans.

As I left the house, I flung my staple pop-of-colour purple scarf over my neck and finished it all off with a spritz of Fantasy by Britney Spears (slightly tacky maybe, but it smells delicious). This look embodied the ‘mysterious girl slinking and browsing around the bookshop’ character – headphones and sneaker heels on and all.

Tuesday

In a bit of a different direction from yesterday, I wanted to style the Chuck 70 De Luxe Heels in a more low-key way, essentially how I would wear my regular Chucks. I went with a little soccer tee (thrifted, again) and my basic tracksuit pants. Of course, I brought layers with me (in the form of a black hoodie), but was provided with a typical La Niña cloudy-but-muggy day.

I matched the white in the shoes to my absurdly big bag, which held an assortment of lip glosses and spare wired headphones (where do these come from? They seem to just materialise at the bottom of my bag). In my head, I was serving Bend It Like Beckham realness with this sport-inspired look, and stomping around in these shoes left me feeling like the ultimate cool girl.

Wednesday

Hump day, work slay. On Wednesday, I found myself working from my favourite cafe – a slightly-hidden Syrian place, not far from my house. It was coffee done in total style: business on top with a white work shirt, and party on the bottom with my cool-girl jeans and favourite skirt layered over the top. While I sat and worked, there was something buzzing around my head – that amazing feeling you get when you’re wearing the perfect pair of shoes and feel unstoppable.

Thursday

A warm, muggy day called for the floatiest dress I could find. This thrifted gem did the trick. I wanted to play into my femininity with the shell-pink dress, lace socks and ethereal braids. I knew that the Chuck 70 De Luxe Heels would be perfect to contrast the girliness of the look. Stark and sporty, the shoes somehow opposed and complemented the look simultaneously.

The Classic Chuck Taylor ankle patch ended up adding to the 2010s’ Tumblr indie sleaze vibe. This isn’t a look I would usually go for, but I love experimenting outside of my comfort zone. The heels were perfect for a stroll around the St Kilda Botanical Gardens (which, by the way, has my whole heart). As I floated around the rose bushes, a man serenaded the gardens on a steel drum. Not going to lie, it felt a little bit like a scene from a really cute romcom (despite the fact that I was sans love interest – that’s not important).

Friday

Friday was a work-from-the-cafe and errand-running type of day, so I wanted to serve a ‘girl on the go’ vibe. I opted for my jeans again (rewearing is hot!!!), and decided to keep the look simple but cool. Wearing the jeans low on my hips, I went with my favourite, most flattering jumper and my Chuck 70 De Luxe Heels. The OrthoLite cushioning of the shoes provided comfort while I felt cute running errands (’twas a good hair day, after all). I ended the week on a high, feeling accomplished, and more importantly, infinitely stylish.
