Back to basics.

I love a good blazer. Whether it’s paired with pristine trousers for a job interview, matched with a mini skirt or simply draped over the shoulders on a chilly night, blazers make me feel like I have my life together.

When I was doing an annual wardrobe spring clean the other day, I realised I’d neglected my blazers for longer coats and puffer jackets during the colder months.

But with the days (hopefully) getting a little warmer soon, I wanted to see how creatives style the versatile, trans-seasonal piece. Below, seven Australian creatives show us how they style a blazer.

Ana Piteira, founder of Reliquia Collective and Blanca Studios

I’m wearing the Blanca Samantha Blazer – a staple of ours that we offer in several colours. For me, it’s a go-to because of its relaxed silhouette. This is my ultimate no-brainer outfit, paired with simple black trousers and a white tee from Bassike. It’s the type of outfit that’s perfect for times when you don’t know if you’ll be pulled into a meeting or dinner, but you can still feel comfortable at your desk all day.

Find a shape that works for you and then build out your collection with some colourful additions. If you’re new to the oversized aesthetic, start with a style that fits well across the shoulders but is roomy around the waist so you don’t feel too enveloped. Also never underestimate the power of a rolled-up sleeve to assist with adding shape to your silhouette.

This outfit makes me look put together but when you break it down, there’s not that much going on. It’s the power of an oversized, structured blazer – any outfit looks chic. This look is probably the best representation of my style – it’s feminine and boyish, it’s effortlessly cool (or at least attempting to be)… an ode to the 90’s model-off-duty style. I love my Djerf Avenue blazers, as everyone does, and wear them daily.

I’m team vintage when it comes to blazer shopping. Go into the men’s blazer section at your local op shop and look for structured, padded shoulder, oversized blazers. Djerf Avenue has mastered the perfect blazer. In terms of styling, I feel like oversized blazers can elevate any outfit – throw it over a sweatsuit and I’m convinced you’re Hailey Bieber.

I absolutely love this blazer – it’s from Uniqlo and it’s super basic and easy to style. I chose to style it with my Silk Laundry pants and a very long silk scarf from the Silk Store in the Royal Arcade. I kept accessories simple, with stilettos from Asos and the gorgeous Inez Bag from Oroton (it fits my laptop, which is all that matters). My wrists feature a gold chain bracelet from Aje and my everyday Casio watch. If you can’t tell, I like to keep it simple, with a few bold moments to tie it all together.

[When styling blazers], don’t be afraid to play with the fabric. I treat my blazers like a shirt. Sure, they can be statement pieces and create structure, but they can and should be malleable. Play around with different textiles and don’t be afraid to feel uncomfortable. Thin, thick, wool, silk, linen and wool – try it all.

Aside from having to wear a particularly unappealing blazer as part of my high school uniform, I’ve always loved a blazer. Whether it’s Katherine Hepburn flouting convention in the 1930s with her menswear-inspired suits, or Mary Kate Olsen wearing an oversized blazer with a ripped vintage tee and Balenciaga Motorcycle bag during her grunge phase, the blazer has an enduring appeal.

I’ve had several vintage iterations over the years (always black and always oversized), but this Uniqlo x Jil Sander one is my favourite. It’s oversized but perfectly tailored and has three pockets on the right side (we love an interesting design feature). I wore it to Melbourne Fashion Week last year with a With Jean corset, Malene Birger pants and heels and felt sleek and powerful (blazers tend to have that effect on me).

Honestly, I only own one blazer and it’s this 2000s Issey Miyake blazer. I love the texture and how prominent the pleats are. Here I’ve paired it with an Issey Miyake men’s knit from the 1980s/1990s, a tennis skirt and Martine Rose x Nike shoes with Chopova Lowena accessories!

For me, I’m not a huge fan of a super tailored or corporate-looking blazer, I’m not trying to ride the restricting shoulder seam/sleeve wave. I (obviously) love a slouchy baggy one… like the rest of my wardrobe!

When buying blazers, I always look for vintage or secondhand ones that are slightly oversized; with uniqueness in the pattern of the fabric or the way it’s cut.

I like to style a blazer with more casual pieces like a hoodie, dad cap or graphic tee – I love this contrast. Throw on some funky sunglasses and sneakers and you have yourself a really effortlessly cool outfit!

I love styling an androgynous look [with a] blazer. I’ve styled it with a white tee, a black knit sweater vest, black cargo pants and some black loafers. I added some black sunglasses, a barbed wire choker and chunky rings, as I love adding accessories to any look. The look isn’t complete without accessories!

I wear whatever I’m feeling [on the] day and because of this, I have many different aesthetics. A tip I’d suggest when styling or purchasing a blazer is to keep it simple with the colour scheme – and layering goes a long way.
