First in, best dressed.
As a fashion editor with over a decade of experience under my belt, I fear the ‘street style’ we see online has become self-contradictory, morphing into ‘outfit-curated-for-the-photo-opportunity style’. To me, genuine street style (that is, style captured on the streets) is much more exciting. I love to see what looks a person has thrown together for their day, maybe for a day out shopping or to meet a friend for a drink.
It’s probably why I enjoy the Little Bourke Street Runway at Melbourne Fashion Week (M/FW) so much each year. Presented by Emporium Melbourne, it’s one of a series of free events packed onto the M/FW schedule and always sees a vibrant and diverse attendance. The runway is always a program highlight but this year, it was even more so, as the runway coincided with Emporium Melbourne’s 10th birthday celebrations.

To say the mood was festive would be an understatement. The space was buzzing with attendees eager to view the runway and celebrate a decade of style, culture and community at Emporium Melbourne. Yes, there was the city’s usual fashion set, but there were also thousands of Melburnians wandering and ready to join the festivities, from freshly-shucked oysters to a pop-up bar. Between it all, Fashion Journal photographer Lekhena Porter captured some stellar looks from the night.
