At home with: Lois Hazel

Home hangs with Lois.

How much do you know about the clothing you own? More specifically, how much do you know about the people who design it?

In our series, At Home, we’re endeavouring to learn a little more about the people responsible for filling our wardrobes.

We went to Brunswick East to hang with independent designer Lois Hazel.

In the morning I… Snooze my alarm way too many times then finally roll over and have cuddles with my pooch, Sara.

My perfume is… this amazing face oil my mum gave me from The Jojoba Company. It smells so fresh and clean.

But my favourite smell is… my dad’s cooking.

It reminds me of… growing up. He would be able to make a feast out of nothing!

The most special people in my life are… my amazing friends from so many different walks of life, my family and dogs.

I’m inspired by… texture, fabrics and experience.

My favourite artist is…  right now I’m really loving Samuel Zeller’s Botonical Series, and some works from Kenneth Josephson. Also a Melbourne artist, Anna Bishop. Her work is sooooo dreamy!

At the moment I’m reading… The Kindness of Strangers, a series of short stories that celebrate the small, kind moments between strangers around the world.

My favourite book is… my sketchbooks. I love sitting down and flicking through them all, seeing my notes, scribbles and random bits from the past that I kept, it’s a lovely walk down memory lane.

In a fire, the one thing I would save is… my dog Sara. We actually had a fire in our apartment last year and not knowing if she was ok or not was the hardest hour of my life!

I always wear… a silver bangle that my uncle bought in Egypt for me when I was born. My mum wore it for 18 years and on my 18th birthday gave it to me. I haven’t taken it off since.

What calms me most is… a good hug and beautiful music.

My best friend is… my husband Felix, the most supportive, caring, generous and incredible person I have ever met.

What I value most is… honesty and authenticity.

Mum always said that I… have really soft cheeks.

I’m happiest when I… am surrounded by friends and family. I really am so lucky to have such a wonderful group of people around me!

My nail colour is… natural, I always end up chipping or picking off any nail colour I paint on my nails.

I dress for… comfort.

I feel best when I… have had a good sleep, and a good feed. Or when I am able to tick all the boxes on my to do list! Such a good feeling.

I feel safest when I… have my man around me.

I want… a world where no one is mistreated or taken advantage of.

I miss… my friends who I’ve met on my travels.

I value… the opportunities I have been given.

The best piece of advice I’ve ever been given is… don’t give up when things get hard, focus on the wins in life.
